50 Years of Deadly
NAIDOC Week 2026 will be held from Sunday 5 July - Sunday 12 July and is an opportunity for all Australians to come together and celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The 2026 theme, 50 Years of Deadly, marks a milestone: 50 years of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience. It’s a tribute to the people who built this movement, including Elders, organisers, artists and communities. This NAIDOC Week is about looking back at the stories, the marches, the languages, the art, and the leadership.*
During NAIDOC Week, we celebrate not just a milestone but a movement that endures, grows, and evolves - driven by the unwavering strength of communities.

The artwork, titled Our River, Our Sky, Our Country, Our Story, was created by the Catherine McAuley Indigenous Strong Sisters group in collaboration with the Jarara Cultural Centre to commemorate ‘50 years of Deadly’, the 2026 theme marking half a century since NAIDOC Week was formally established. The fifty circles woven by students with raffia, echo the Indigenous practice of weaving, where different generations convene to share knowledge and cultural rituals. Each circle is a physical representation of the celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, histories, and Cultures recognised within NAIDOC week.
The artwork is divided into brown, blue and navy thirds, representing country, waterways and sky country - all aspects of the inextricable nature of Indigenous spirituality to the natural world. The dark navy sky is adorned with constellations made by flicking watered-down paint onto the canvas, and at its core lies the ‘emu in the sky’, a constellation utilised by First-Nations Peoples to track seasonal changes and navigate land and waters for tens of thousands of years. At the heart of this artwork lies the Parramatta river; a tribute to Catherine McAuley’s local river which acted as a vital food source for clans like the Burramattagal, Wangal, and Wallemudegal. The brown sector represents the Strong Sisters group’s commitment to uplifting and supporting each other in learning about and celebrating their First Nations culture, expressed by both junior and senior members spraying their handprints on the brown earth.
