Balenciaga Summer 27 Les Coraux de la Liberté
Balenciaga’s identity—as a Maison de Couture—shapes the Summer 27 Collection by Creative
Director Pierpaolo Piccioli. It is a personal exploration and investigation, of couture as a working methodology but also an ideology; a mindset for modern creation that can infiltrate the culture of a fashion house. Within, techniques originating in the 55th Balenciaga Couture Collection are applied to a spectrum of ready-to-wear clothing for both women and men. Through this, a trace of humanity can be found in every garment—a quality that defines them, as Balenciaga.
A wardrobe of prototypical ready-to-wear garments—denim jeans, shirts, t-shirts, bombers,
accessories—are redefined through studies of cut and construction, and their proximity to the hand. Pieces begin their life in the House’s ateliers, using processes of draping and forming to determine their architecture. Through superlative cut and construction—human intervention—we can change the language of the known.
Couture is treated as a laboratory of possibilities. Rather than something unobtainable, it functions as a dynamic engine to drive the House, a systematic manner to reshape everyday garments. Couture can literally translate as stitching: a technique of sewing, transposed from internal structures of tailoring and first employed within the 55th Couture Collection, is used to bring new volume in ready-to-wear. It features on leathers and cottons, creating basque shapes referent to archival Balenciaga silhouettes, yet shifted to t-shirts and leather jackets. These methods and meanings can have relevance for a new generation, for the future.
Bias cutting modifies the language of identifiable pieces—evening dresses, but also jeans and shirts, men’s suiting. Their authenticity remains, yet their rapport with the body alters. The body and hand are at the core throughout. Women’s and men’s shoes are pliant, malleable, soft against the foot: the Wave Thong Sandal, a flat in toile canvas, the heeled Dahlia Mule, and the new unstructured Lounge Sneaker. Bags such as the Nodo or Silhou Tote are supple, executed in leather, shaped and draped by hand and organic; Bow Mask Sunglasses have artisan-braided arms; Getaria seashell-inspiredjewelry feels natural, personal, real.
Every facet of the wardrobe comes to reflect Cristóbal Balenciaga’s primary philosophy, of the body as the basis, expressed in a new manner. Calais lace insertions and cutwork opens windows onto the body, used not as decoration but as structure. A lightness and softness are present throughout, a modern sensibility. In a focus on how garments move and feel, a priority is inherently afforded to comfort and ease—as if in your own skin.
Decoration is never in service of artifice. It functions. Abstracted, imaginary flowers in organza are filled with compressed air, used to echo volumes with a mathematical rhythm. Silhouettes recall Balenciaga antecedents, gestures evoked through pragmatic measures like drawstrings and buttoned collars, while fabrication can transform physicality and attitude through the most direct action. Freedom of gesture, freedom of movement, freedom of choice.
At the center of the Balenciaga Summer 2027 scenography sits Les Coraux de la Liberté (2025) by
French artist Aude Franjou, a work that affords the collection its title. Meticulously realized through wrapped linen, this piece explores a free interplay of art and craft. It also proposes an analogy—of a couture house not as mere physical structure, but as an entire ecosystem. Living, breathing, alive.
