Meet the artist behind our new mural
Bastian Allfrey is a mural artist with more than ten years of experience bringing colour and character to public spaces. His work shifts in style depending on the place and the story it needs to tell, ranging from bold, vibrant pieces to quieter, more detailed scenes. Bastian knows how to make murals that last, using the right materials and techniques to ensure they hold up outdoors and over time. He’s collaborative by nature and enjoys working closely with the people connected to each site. His murals aim to reflect the community around them, spark curiosity and create moments of connection.
About the piece
'Emergence' is based on the idea that each of us carries a unique story shaped through experience, resilience, and the relationships that hold us. Bastian says "My own story is closely tied to the natural environment. I feel a deep sense of connection to the landscapes I move through, and painting becomes a way to honour that relationship and translate it into something others can share. Flowers, with their seasonal rhythms and vital role in sustaining ecosystems, mirror this unfolding journey. They sit at the centre of countless natural exchanges, connecting plants and pollinators and supporting the broader web of life."
In this piece, Bastian draws on native flora that reflects the focus of my current practice. Their strength, adaptability, and distinctly Australian character speak to a deeper resilience that grows through adversity and is rooted in place. These species also echo the local environment surrounding the artwork, creating a meaningful connection between the mural and its landscape.
The composition invites viewers to pause and consider their own pathways of growth and change. Just as these florals respond to their environment, we continually reshape our stories, grounded by where we come from and evolving toward where we are headed.
This selection of flora includes Banksia spinulosa (Birthday Candles), Westringia (Wynyabbie Gem), Acacia podalyriifolia (Queensland Wattle), Eucalyptus melliodora (Yellow Box Gum), Buckinghamia celsissima (Ivory Curl), Protea cynaroides (King Protea), Eucalyptus polyanthemos (Red Box Gum), Eucalyptus argophloia (Queensland White Gum), and Callistemon salignus (White Bottlebrush), each chosen for its strength, character, and connection to the surrounding landscape.
