Han Sheng Chiu

Brisbane South Basketball League

Resilient. Inclusive. Selfless.

Han Sheng Chiu has been awarded a $20,000 grant for their organisation, Brisbane South Basketball League.

For more than 15 years, Han Sheng Chiu has been volunteering 20 hours per week to mentor, organise and lead at Brisbane South Basketball League (BSBL).

BSBL is a thriving multicultural basketball league that has grown under Han’s leadership. The community-run, incorporated association now supports more than 500 registered players each season and positively influences thousands of people, including families, friends and volunteers.

“My love for basketball is what first inspired me, but what truly motivates me is seeing the positive impact it has on every player involved with BSBL,” says Han.

“The joy, confidence and improved wellbeing our players gain gives me immense fulfilment,” he adds.

More than a basketball club, BSBL is a welcoming community where recent migrants find connection, friendship and a sense of belonging. Through competitions and community events, including the Asia Pacific Basketball Tournament, the club unites people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Alongside organising competitions, guiding players and supporting volunteers, Han also works hard to keep fees affordable for people experiencing financial hardship.

Whether securing court space, coordinating schedules or finding ways to stretch limited resources, Han is constantly looking for solutions that keep more people connected through sport. His dedication ensures the club continues to grow and remain accessible to the community.

“Through BSBL, we actively seek pathways for players to compete interstate and overseas, giving them exposure, experience and belief in their potential,” he explains. “Knowing we can open doors and change life trajectories keeps me committed.”

We'd like to thank and acknowledge our finalists who will receive a $5,000 grant for the organisation they represent
