Inspiring students in partnership with South Metropolitan TAFE

Westfield Carousel is excited to be partnering with South Metropolitan TAFE again in 2022, after the success of our collaboration last year.

Working closely with a group of six fashion business students, we gave these fresh up-and-comers the opportunity and creative challenge to flex their design skills, by visual merchandising our display cabinets in centre this season.

The brief and concept

To create an Autumn/Winter fashion display for Westfield Carousel that’s unique and visually striking. Students worked in small groups to ideate and bring their visions to life through sketch, moodboards and graphic design.

The big reveal

We’re proud to unveil the below concepts in our centre. Brought to life in true form, from the creative minds of South Metropolitan TAFE students. You can see that their creative journey from the initial moodboard and digital design phases came to fruition.

The talent behind the design

Meet Emma, Katherine, Michelle, Adian, Caitlin and Bronte, the masterminds behind the design. Read on to discover their inspiration, challenges and favourite moments working with us.

Why did you choose to study Visual Merchandising?
We choose to do visual merchandising as it is a way for all of us to express our creativity. Getting the opportunity to create a story and feeling through visual elements. We also love the “DIY” / hands on aspect that comes with getting to create props and the installation final visual displays.

What inspirations did you draw upon to create your design?
We were really inspired by the concept of a safe and inviting environment. Combing together sculptural and contemporary shapes that feature soft rounded edges to create that feeling of safety and happiness. The colour palette was inspired by warm comforting tones creating a calm and inviting environment.

Who did you partner with to bring your concept to life?
We partnered with Centre Graphics and Foam Sales in Booragoon to create all of our beautiful shapes for our window. As well as Westfield for allowing us the opportunity to install visual displays within their centre.

What did you enjoy the most about the project?
We loved the fulfilment and enjoyment of getting to work together as a team and creating a concept from start to finish. Being able to go from a concept design that we all love to seeing our designs come to life is extremely rewarding. We have all enjoyed developing and working on our creative confidence, stepping out of our comfort zone and challenging ourselves with things we have never had the chance to do before.

What was most challenging about this project?
The most challenging thing for our team was choosing and reaching a final design that we thought would be perfect and reflected the mood we wanted to create. Working on this project through COVID time has been a challenge and learning experience for us all.

This successful partnership has provided students with practical experience, working with timelines, budgets and suppliers from different industries. Most importantly, it gave students a public podium to spotlight their creative work for our community and retailers to enjoy.

As a result of this collaboration, two of the 2021 Fashion Business students who participated in the program have gone on to work with the suppliers who helped the students with bringing their displays to life, providing further invaluable industry experience.
