Mall Music: Start Looping Beginner Workshop

Looking for a Different School Holiday Activity? Discover the Magic of Looping
Whether your child has been learning guitar for six months or six years, practising can sometimes start to feel... well, repetitive. That's where looping comes in.
A loop station lets musicians record a musical phrase with the tap of a footswitch, then play it back instantly, so they can layer new parts on top. A single guitarist can become an entire band—adding rhythm, lead lines, harmonies and percussion one layer at a time. It's creative, rewarding, and one of the best ways to make practice feel like play.
More Than Just a Cool Effect
Many parents assume loopers are just for live performers, but they're also fantastic learning tools.
A looper encourages young musicians to:
- Develop better timing and rhythm
- Listen more critically to their own playing
- Build confidence improvising
- Experiment with songwriting
- Practice lead guitar over their own chord progressions
Rather than playing the same exercises over and over, students can create their own backing tracks and jam along with themselves. It's no surprise that teachers often recommend looping to make practice more engaging.
You've Probably Heard One Before
Some of the world's most recognisable performers use looping to create huge sounds from just one person on stage.
Ed Sheeran is perhaps the best-known example, building complete songs live by layering guitar, percussion and vocals.
Tash Sultana creates rich, immersive performances using loops, guitars, keyboards and vocals.
KT Tunstall famously brought looping into the mainstream with her live performances of Black Horse and the Cherry Tree, inspiring countless musicians to explore the technique.
Watching these artists perform is often the moment young guitarists realise what's possible.
Come and Try It Yourself
These school holidays, Mall Music is hosting Start Looping, a relaxed, beginner-friendly workshop for guitarists and singer-songwriters looking to learn the basics.
They'll cover:
- What a looper does
- How to create your first loop
- Common beginner mistakes (and how to avoid them)
- Using a looper for practice, songwriting and performance
- Choosing the right BOSS Loop Station
There'll also be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, see live demonstrations and try the pedals for yourself.
