What is Diwali?

Diwali, or Deepavali, is the Festival of Lights which coincides with the Hindu New Year and is a time to celebrate new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil. Diwali is one of the most significant celebrations in India and millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains celebrate Diwali each year.

Diwali is celebrated over five days:

Dhanteras: Start of Diwali and a day dedicated to cleaning to Welcome Goddess Lakshmi. To celebrate Dhanteras, people traditionally buy gold and new kitchen utensils.

Naraka Chaturdasi/Choti Diwali: Known as ‘Little Diwali’. Coloured artwork ‘Rangoli’ is created in doorways and courtyard of homes along with the opening of fire crackers.

Lakshmi Puja/Kali Puja: The third day is the main Diwali festival. Lights and lamps are placed around households, festive foods and gifts are shared amongst family and friends. After the puja, people go outside and celebrate by lighting up fireworks.

Govardhan Puja/Padva: The day after Diwali is the first day of Kartik's bright fortnight where people will visit friends and relatives. Most of the time this day coincides with Gujarti New Year day.

Bhai Dooj/Vishwakarma Puja: Sisters are visited by their brothers and prepare lavish meals to share. Brothers will give gifts to sisters, and sisters will pray for their brothers to have long and happy lives.
