Bronte Naylor

Bronte Naylor - Artist - Kotara
Bronte Naylor is an interdisciplinary artist known for her expansive collage work, blending painting, photography, performance, and digital media. With a keen focus on societal dynamics, she navigates public and private spaces, challenging established hierarchies. Her series ‘Counterweight’ delves into Newcastle’s post-industrial landscape, reflecting on Western attitudes toward mourning and the complexities of modern Australia.

Through her art, Naylor examines emotional themes such as love and decay, juxtaposed with industrial remnants. She often ventures into industrial spaces, questioning conventional notions of land ownership. Embracing a citizen science approach, she documents the Anthropocene, capturing imagined timelines within her evocative works.

About the artwork:
Mural artwork - Bronte Nealy (4)
This mural responds to Westfield Kotara’s unique character by weaving together elements of Newcastle’s coastal identity, local flora, and layered cultural histories.
Inspired by the natural beauty of the region, the artwork features the Flannel Flower and Banksia Integrifolia—both native to the area—as well as the Great Cormorant, a waterbird commonly seen along the Hunter coastline. These elements are framed within an abstracted coastal topography, referencing the flow of land and sea that defines the region.

Painted in rich, earthy hues with crisp white and blue highlights, the palette balances
warmth with contrast, in line with the project brief’s emphasis on neutrals. These cooler tones bring clarity and structure to the composition, ensuring visual interest and legibility from a distance. Positioned at the Park Avenue entry, the mural transforms the space into a vibrant, welcoming threshold, one that fosters a sense of connection, identity, and belonging within the community.

Brett Piva

Untitled design (9)
Newcastle artist Brett Piva recently completed a mural on The Rooftop, bringing a new and colourful life to the beloved space. We chatted with him to learn more about his art processes and what the Newcastle community means to the local art scene.
I’m a Newcastle based painter, sculptor, installation artist and muralist.

My work intersects two worlds; the natural landscape of the Australian bush and the manufactured surfaces of urbanised space. Diverse organic markings sourced from sojourns in remote environments are replicated on manmade surfaces; gnarling curls of bark against the perfection of cut glass, or the lines of leaves on brick and mortar.
The organic and synthetic are constantly at play and reflecting the other’s attributes. Reflection itself is an enduring theme in my work.

About the artwork:
Untitled design (10)
The mural is inspired mostly by the natural landscape of surrounding environments. Instead of viewing the landscape as a whole, I take note of what is closer to the surface. Marks hidden within Eucalyptus bark, patterns discovered within leaves or fronds, the repetition of water rushing over stones alongside the various colours one discovers when completely immersing themselves in an environment.

Including these forms and colours share a new vibrancy to the Westfield Rooftop experience that is like no other.

Scott Marsh

Scott Marsh - Kotara art
Scott Marsh is one of Australia's most iconic and infamous street artists. With a deep history in graffiti culture, he’s recognised internationally for his signature, politically inspired and newsworthy mural pieces. From tagging Sydney trains at 12 to becoming a finalist in both the Moran Portrait Prize and Archibald Prize, Scott confronts the common perceptions around street art and graffiti, using traditional art techniques to prove that fine art can exist and succeed beyond oil and canvas. While some of his interpretations may be contentious, the overwhelming majority of Australians admire and encourage his work, with each piece attracting droves of spectators and transforming mundane buildings into shrines of hope, resilience and social change.

About the artwork:
Scott Marsh - Kotara art
A significant public art installation aimed at capturing nature in the heart of regional NSW, Scott Marsh’s ‘Australian Natives’ is a flawless representation of contemporary street art.
This 50-metre-long mural installation makes a strong visual statement, situated across the interior of two retail levels and the entry to the entertainment and lifestyle precinct of the Centre.

The artwork was completed and launched in September 2018, to coincide with the Centre’s new Rooftop opening, and includes a ‘bird of paradise’, paying homage to the Centre’s past, which featured the flower in its logo.

Through the use of both brush and spray can, Marsh was able to create immense detail, while still holding true to his graffiti roots.
