Meet the artist behind our Fresh Food precinct mural

Australian artist Gus Eagleton explores the connection between people and place through figurative painting. His paintings are created using multiple images taken at different times, places and perspectives to blend figuration into unique artworks, creating visually compelling narratives, a painted representation of people and place, not an exact copy. His practice aims to capture fleeting moments and portray a first-person perspective. Eagleton is not interested in highlighting renowned people or people of note unless it is relevant. He prefers to highlight the richness of everyday life and relatable issues of the time.

His vibrant colour palettes, striking visual style, and skilful manipulation of light and shadow create a dreamlike quality, drawing viewers in. Each piece tells a visual story, inviting viewers to imagine the narrative behind it. Eagleton's art enhances public spaces by engaging viewers and creating memorable visual experiences. His ability to combine realism with a touch of collage/abstraction ensures that his work captivates and leaves a lasting impression, enriching the places and spaces where his artworks are found.

About the piece

In Your Backyard is a vibrant celebration of the natural beauty hidden in plain sight. The piece brings to life the delicate balance of local flora and fauna, centring on the striking pale-headed rosella, whose vibrant blues, yellows, and aquas echo the subtropical hues of the northern suburbs of the Gold Coast and specifically Helensvale.

The composition intertwines native blooms, leafy textures, and the subtle movement of the midday sun, reminding reviews of what lies beyond their doorstep; the artwork invites an appreciation for the overlooked wonders found within your everyday backyards of Australia.
