Spring Racing Style Edit: Caulfield Cup

Caulfield Cup is the first of the major Race Days in Victoria.

This year, held on Saturday 19 October at Caulfield Racecourse, it’s the perfect place to start the Spring Racing Carnival with a bang! If you’re heading to the Caulfield Cup, why not jump straight into the new season and try out more playful looks. The Caulfield Cup has a youthful energy and free-spirited feel to the day. Whilst racing at the Caulfield Cup is steeped in tradition, the style rules are not. It’s the place to be a little flirtier and fun with your style.

Last year at Caulfield Cup, hemlines were just starting to creep a little higher. This year, mini hemlines are IN and will be seen all around the racecourse. You can try the look with a fitted dress or something with a ruffle or flared hem, such as the New Orleans dress in tangerine from Sheike, as styled by Westfield Style Authority Paul. Whatever trend you try, make sure you’re picking a style that you feel most confident in.

If you go mini for your hemline and show more skin on the bottom, try balancing the look by covering up a little more on top. You could try a long sleeved number or an asymmetric one shoulder style such as the Daisy Asym mini dress by Bec and Bridge as seen above. Statement sleeves and one-shoulder numbers are another key trend this season and add a touch of sophistication. They are especially great when the weather is a little unpredictable, as we know it can be in Melbourne in October. To further amplify your look, why not introduce a bold block colour or print into your dress. The best part about Caulfield is there are no firm rules, so you can be as brave and bold as you choose!

Bags with a strap are my favourite for the races as it leaves your hands free to enjoy the day. A cross body bag with a chain strap, such as the caramel Furla bag seen above, is a must-have that you’ll be able to use again and again this season, beyond the Spring Carnival. Keep bags compact, just big enough to hold the essentials - phone, purse, lipstick and hopefully a winning ticket!

It’s not a race day look without millinery. Whilst previous years have seen certain styles dominating, such as percher style headpieces, this season there really is something for everyone. Brimmed hats will continue to be popular this season, such as the boater hat seen below from Myer, styled by Paul. Another option is an embellished headpiece on a head band, which is a simple way to make a statement, while being incredibly comfortable to wear. I also love seeing colour combinations through pairing your millinery with your accessories.

For men, you can’t go wrong with a well fitted suit. To make a suit race day ready, it’s all about adding extra details. A tie that contrasts with the suit and matching flower lapel pin elevate a well-cut suit, like this one as seen above/below from Peter Jackson. Keep it cool and sleek by adding a tie bar to keep everything in place as you cheer your horse past the winning post.

Caulfield Cup is just the warm up, there’s plenty more to come for the Spring Racing season. Next Stop, Derby Day at Flemington.
