Celebrating 50 years of Witchery fashion
In eager anticipation of Witchery’s 50th Anniversary Collection, we sat down with Head of Design and Creative, Gavin Gage, to get his take on yesterday, today and the future of Witchery fashion.
Q. If you had to sum up your approach to design in three words, what would they be?
A. Inspiring, ambitious and on-trend.
Q. You speak of quality-focused fashion, what does quality fashion mean to you?
A. Quality for me is from inception through to delivery. The quality of the design is paramount. The selection of quality raw materials is a must and the quality of make, fit and detail is integral.
Q. How has the Witchery woman evolved since the '70s?
A. Incredibly, would be the short answer. But for a slightly longer version, the Witchery woman has evolved to become a multifaceted, socially-responsible and accomplished woman in her own right.
Q. What defines the ‘modern woman’ to you?
A. Diverse, strong, intelligent and inspirational.
Q. What does a typical day look like for you?
A. Busy… and I’m not complaining. My role is working with the design teams on apparel and accessories, developing the collections from concept to reality. That entails lots of creative design and development meetings, fit meetings and working with my team to bring the collections to life. It’s one of life’s pleasures.
Q. Who or what inspires your design? Do you have any influences?
A. My influences change seasonally. One season it will be art and culture and another music and tastemakers. Often my main references come from international runways and interpreting the trends to present them in a modern and sophisticated way, curating collections that inspire confidence in women.
Q. When did you first realise you wanted to pursue a career as a designer?
A. Early teens, and worked back then to create my folio to interview for design schools. I was successful, and studied for three years to gain a Diploma in Fashion, after which I transitioned into the industry.
Q. When dressed in this collection, how will a woman feel?
A. She will feel and imbue Witchery’s core approach to design. She will feel inspired, ambitious and on-trend.
Q. What do the next 50 years of Witchery fashion look like - how will the Witchery woman evolve?
A. I think both the brand and customer will look fashionable, inclusive and of the moment!
The Witchery 50th Anniversary Capsule Collection will launch in store and online on the 14th October.
