The perfect blowout in 5 easy steps

Blow out hair

It’s a look you’ve seen recently: flawless hair and timeless, feminine outfits, paired with statement glowing skin, neutral makeup and perfect pouts. Think Hailey Bieber, Rose Byrne or those with clean, polished ‘I’ve-got-it-together’ auras.

Luckily for you and I, dear reader, we needn’t be perfect to look it.

If your hair looks impeccable, the rest of the soft glam look will be effortless. This could be a slick ponytail or tight braids, but for many the defining feature is a perfect bouncy blowout. Salons and blowdry bars are great, but for everyday soft glam, it's easy to achieve that tousled look at home with just a few key tools.

PERFECTING THE BLOWOUT

Your blowout toolkit:

  • Heat protectant
  • Products for your hair type
  • Large hair clips
  • Hair dryer
  • Round brush (the bigger the barrel, the bigger the hair) or a hot brush, a combined dryer and round brush
  • Finishing products

Find everything you need for your blowout toolkit at Maurice Meade, David Jones, Myer, Coles, Woolworths, Mecca, Priceline, Price Attack and Just Cuts

PRODUCTS

Before even looking at a hairdryer, it’s important to consider what your hair needs. For example, volumising mousse or root lifter gets the best results for thinner locks, and a smoothing balm will help those who dread humidity. For all hair types, a heat protectant is recommended to keep hair healthy and deliver a smoother result, as well as an oil or serum to finish the look.

Hot tip: a conditioning hair mask beforehand will give your hair a shining advantage. Pick one up at Mecca, Adore Beauty, Priceline and The Shampoo Shop.

STEP 1 — PREP

Wash and condition hair, then pat out moisture with a soft towel. Blowdry on a lower heat setting with your head upside down until it’s just slightly damp. Apply heat protectant, volumising products to the roots, and then divide into rough sections and clip up. Aim for around 3-6 sections separating the lower scalp/neck area, middle scalp and the top of your head. Or you can clip it all up and take down sections as you go.

STEP 2 — POSITION

Unclip a lower section and tuck the brush under the hair, against the scalp, so the hair is pulled up and over the brush. Position the hairdryer to blow across the top of the brush and hair, with the nozzle pointing towards the ends to keep hair smooth.

STEP 3 — LIFT AND DRY

Now, gently pull up the brush, twisting it outwards, with the hairdryer hovering over the top of the brush drying the hair as it glides through. Pull the brush to the ends of the hair and repeat until fully dry. Do this with each section, until just the hair around the top of the face remains.

STEP 4 — FRAME THE FACE

For the last section position the brush above the hair, pulling it up and over the brush with the nozzle pointed away from the face this time. Glide the brush through, pulling in a forward, upward motion. This ensures the hair feathers out slightly around the face.

STEP 5 — FINISH

Flick your hair back and admire your handiwork. Don’t worry if it feels too big, as the hair will settle quickly. Finish with a light hairspray and use a hair oil or serum to add shine to the ends and mid-lengths.

COMPLETE THE LOOK

The key to soft glam is leaning into a feminine outfits. Think soft cascading textures like chiffon or tulle, curvy dresses in pastel and blush tones, cinematic crimson gowns or simple tailored silk shorts. Small accents, like metallic or crystal details, can lift everyday looks into glam territory.

When it comes to makeup, aim for classic neutrals over radiant skin, with blush and bronzer giving that healthy glow. Highlighter is key to modern soft glam, giving dimension, plump and glow, right where you want it.

You now radiate quiet glamour.

Last, but not least, step outside feeling confident and powerful.

If you want to leave it to the professionals, book in your appointment at Maurice Meade, Salon Express, Price Attack and Just Cuts today.
