4 easy makeup trends to try this spring and summer

From bold gemstone encrusted lids to a fresh-faced glow, spring/summer 2022 truly has a makeup trend to suit everyone and any occasion. Whether you've got a busy, upcoming social calendar, filled with parties and weddings or simply want to change up your everyday look, here are four popular beauty trends you can expect to see this season, as well as super easy ways to recreate them yourself.

1. Let your lids do the talking

This is the season for statement eyes and what simplier way to do so than lighting yours up with colour. How big your go is completely up to you. The best place to start is to pick a constrasting shade with that of your hair, eyes or even your outfit - this is what will really make things pop! (Google colour wheel to work out what shades sit opposite to each other.)

  1. Once you've completed your base, pop some primer on your lids to better the staying power of your eyeshadow colour. Next, give your whole lids a wash of your chosen colour (we used a jade green for this).
  2. To amp up the intensity, pop a darker shade in your crease line, concentrating on the outer corners. You can also use black or a dark chocolate brown for an even more intense look. The trick with eyeshadow is to blend and blend some more. This will give you a professional finish.
  3. With a finer brush, line the bottom of your eyes with your chosen colour before adding a lick of mascara on your lashes. For a glitzy party look, dab some pearlescent or glitter powder to the middle of your lids.
  4. Finally, finish with a nude, matte lip and and a tint of colour on your cheeks to pull this look together whilst giving your eyes centre stage.

2. Gem eyes

The stars and your party outfit will align with this look. The Y2K trend makes yet another comeback, this time in the form of gemstone eye embellishments. Pop on a couple of subtle sparkles for date night or rock a full bedazzled look for the perfect statement festival makeup.

  1. You'll want keep the rest of your make up pretty simple. A matte base pairs best to give your eyes maximum limelight.
  2. Give your lids a sweep of a subtle shade like coral, beige or brown. If you're using coloured stones, you could also try an eyeshadow in the same colour. Line your eyes, add a couple of coats of mascara or if you're using false lashes, now would be the time to pop them on.
  3. Next, get creative with your gem placements. Concentrating on the inner and outer corners of the eyes tends to flatter most eye shapes.
  4. Finish it off with a touch of colour on your cheeks and to balance out your eyes a glossy lip whether it be a subtle nude or classic red.

3. Au naturel

Fresh skin, brushy brows and a cute dash of freckles (feel free to fake a couple of you don't have any) - what more could we want? We simply can't get enough of the no make up make up trend, and this season is no different. This natural look is all about celebrating you, and flaunting what your Mama gave you. So let's jump right in!

  1. The key to this trend is getting your base right. Fresh, dewy skin calls for good skincare prep. Go ahead with your regular routine, using any cleansers, serums and going in a little heavier on the hydrators you would normally use.
  2. Next either with a tinted sunscreen or moisturiser, combine a drop or two of a liquid highlighter and blend this evenly to create a lightweight sheer base.
  3. If you need some extra coverage, go in with concealer only where you need it like under the eyes and on the sides of your nose and mouth. However, the idea is to look like you haven't worn any product at all so don't fuss too much about covering every blemish - you want your natural skin to still shine through.
  4. To your brows, fill them in lightly and with some brow gel or soap, brush and shape them, making a point to brush the starting hairs upwards for a bushier effect.
  5. Next give your lids a wash of matte brown eyeshadow, just a touch darker than your skin, and line and coat your top lash line with brown eyeliner and mascara for subtle definition.
  6. Finally, with a cream tint, give your cheeks and lips a wash of colour, and for extra dewiness, dab a little more highlighter on the inner corners of your eyes, highest points of your cheekbones, tip of your nose and cupid's bow.

4. Crushing over coral

So pretty, especially for the sunny season, coral is in and there's no better celebration of this shade than this youthful, monochromatic look, inspired by Korean makeup. Even better, coral flatters just about every skintone and this trend can be easily recreated with minimal products or effort.

  1. Depending on your preference, start with either a matte or dewy base. With a blush brush sweep your chosen coral shade on your cheeks, carrying the colour to your cheekbones. With the remainder on your brush, dust a little on the bridge your nose to create a sun-kissed flushed effect.
  2. For the eyes, swipe the same cheek colour on your lids - we told you this look is easy! If you want more depth, blend a slightly darker shade into the outer corners. Add a coat of mascara on your lashes and lightly define your brows (soap brows work particularly well here!).
  3. Finish with a peachy lippy (or if you used a cream lip and cheek tint pop some on your lips) and dab highlighter on the inner corners of your eyes.
