Ripe for picking - your seasonal food guide
Autumn is upon us and It's that time of the year again when the temperature starts to drop. And so we say goodbye to mangos, peaches and all our beloved summer fruits – lychee mojitos you will be sorely missed!
But just because it's getting cooler doesn't mean you can't get your hands on delicious fresh fruit and veg this season. A whole new crop is hitting our shelves and it’s safe to say there will be something equally tasty this winter season. Here’s our guide to this season’s fresh fruit and veg, ripe for picking.
Peak season for mandarin oranges is from April to early spring. Primarily grown in the sunshine state, mandarins are sweet in flavour, easy to peel and best of all have few seeds. Perfect for school lunches and a natural immune boosting remedy, you can’t go past these citrus goodies this season.
If you want to add a little tropical flare to your fruit salad this season, there's no time like the present to get your hands on some kiwifruit. Best from March to June, kiwifruit are great tasting and highly nutritious, providing more vitamin C than the equivalent amount of an orange.
Pears are at their peak, so eat as is, and enjoy their juiciness with hints of sweetness. Keep an eye out for the Josephine pear, which is available from April to late spring. Well-known for its rich flavour, this pear is one of the best for eating.
Often classed as a fruit because it’s used like one, rhubarb is technically a vegetable. This cool season veg is your perfect source of important nutrients such as calcium, potassium manganese and vitamins B, C and K. Best cooked, sweetened and combined with other fruits, Rhubarb adds a tangy twist and radiant red colour to your pies, cakes and tarts.
