In 1976, our centre opened its doors for the very first time, a humble beginning that grew into something truly special.

For 50 years, Westfield Airport West has been more than a shopping centre — it’s been a place where our community has grown up together.

From families who settled here to work at Essendon Airport, to retailers who’ve served generations of locals, to team members who’ve built lifelong careers within these walls — our story is deeply connected to the people of Airport West and surrounding suburbs.

As we celebrate half a century, we honour the memories, milestones and moments that have shaped our shared history.

Here is a look back at how we celebrated 50 years with you, our community.

1976 – Grand Opening

Westfield Airport West officially opens, establishing itself as a key retail destination in Melbourne’s north-west. Built to service the growing Airport West community the centre quickly becomes a local meeting place.

1980s – Cliff Young's Wedding

Australian ultramarathon legend Cliff Young held his widely publicised open wedding celebration at Westfield Airport West.

The event captured national attention, with members of the public invited to attend — reinforcing the centre’s place not just as a retail destination, but as a true community gathering space.

1986 - 1990s – Significant Redevelopment & Expansion

A larger redevelopment was completed around 1998–1999, significantly increasing the retail footprint. New major stores such as Target, Village 8 Cinemas, and additional specialty stores were added — boosting the centre’s position in the district’s retail landscape.

1998 – Freeway Construction

In 1998 the city's first direct freeway ramp directly into a shopping centre was built.

2010 – Refurbishments Continue

The centre saw another phase of internal upgrades in 2010, refreshing interiors and shop fronts alongside improvements to services.

2020s – Retail Mix Evolution

The centre continues to evolve its mix of stores and experiences, introducing new fashion, food and lifestyle retailers to better serve the growing and diverse local trade area.
