Be prepared: handbag beauty essentials

As modern women, we find ourselves being more and more multifaceted. We can play the role of mother, lover, bad-ass boss, attentive friend, carefree beach babe and international woman of mystery all in one day. And people still argue that is was the Boy Scouts that coined the phrase “be prepared”? I don’t believe it – I say it was a working mum.

And why should this fail-safe system of carrying around a Mary-Poppins-style bag filled to the brim with everything from USB sticks to baby wipes come to a screeching halt when making sure we are looking good? Here we break down some key essentials every woman should carry on her to make sure she's ready for the boardroom, the bar or the beach at any given time.

A great way to keep your hair looking fresh is with a trusty dry shampoo, whether you are on day three of your hair-washing cycle or looking to create a bit of volume. Alternatively, if you are rocking a sleek ponytail look, stocking a can of firm-hold hairspray in your purse will help keep those wispy bits at bay throughout the day.

Carrying body products on you is particularly important for the cooler months – dry knees, elbows and hands are a constant annoyance in winter. A great tip to finding suitable bag-friendly container sizes instead of huge tubs is to shop in the travel section of the pharmacy, ensuring you don’t put your back out for the sake of looking good!

Who hasn’t had the age-old predicament of having dinner plans at the end of an exhausting work day? You must rally – but how to find energy? Nothing aids this problem more than a fresh spritz of facial mist, followed by some punchy red lipstick. The Stila Stay All Day Liquid lipstick in Beso (true red) is a personal favourite of mine – it would stay on perfectly through a hurricane.

Australians (myself included) tend to be guilty of forgetting to slip-slop-slap when autumn and winter roll around. We forget that although it may be cooler, winter in Australia also tends to be some of the driest months right across the continent, so it's important to keep up our sun protection. A great way to do this is to invest in a good face and body moisturiser, a foundation and a lip balm that all also contain SPF, so it doesn’t need to add time to your morning beauty regime.
