Layer your way - The hottest trends to steal from VAMFF
Diverse models, sartorial magic, and three days of catwalks. This year’s Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF), despite being cut short, left plenty of inspiration for our Autumn / Winter wardrobe. The theme this year? Overt drama. From bold metallics to over-the-top sleeves, we’re all over the unapologetic excess that strutted down the runway. And because fashion should always be fun, Celeste Barber’s appearance at the Harper’s BAZAAR runway proved a comical treat amongst what is usually a sea of stern faces.
One of our favourite trends from this year’s VAMFF, available to shop at your nearest Westfield, is the layered suit look.
Party season is over, but there’s always a reason to make a style statement. When your presence is beckoned on even the chilliest of Autumn and Winter days, you’ll want a look that keeps you warm but looking cool. Layer up with sharp suiting in a luxurious fabric.
A great suit has the power to make a lasting appearance, their tailored silhouettes responsible for paving many a designer’s path to global success. It’s both unassuming yet powerfully provocative, satisfying any dress code. Getting low on the dance floor no longer poses an outfit dilemma, and a suit ensures you’ll always look as professional as possible when striding through the office.
This season, we loved the sequinned blush suit at Carla Zampatti for a bit of night-time glitz (you can also knock off the sequinned trend at the same time). For the day, we’re seriously lusting after Manning Cartell’s ensemble in a delicious shade of pistachio.
But let’s talk layering for a bit. Styling your suit is all about the layers. If you’re sporting a more structured, slim-cut suit, why not layer with a wool-top coat? Just make sure it’s got enough to room to accommodate your suit underneath. Hint: if you can’t raise your arms above your head, it’s too tight.
If loosely structured is more your vibe, a turtleneck knit underneath your suit jacket is the best way to go. Keep all items loose fitting, for an on-trend look.
