Trevor Eddy: Local Heroes 2019 Alumni

Trevor is a tenacious treasurer, fighting for a sanctuary’s rights

Meet Trevor Eddy from Clota Cottage, one of Westfield Doncaster’s 2019 Westfield Local Heroes.

The Clota Cottage Neighbourhood House is a much-valued sanctuary within the community where elderly, disabled and lonely people can socialise and learn new skills, with a focus on embracing community members whose first language is not English.

The $10,000 Westfield Local Heroes grant has enabled Clota Cottage Neighbourhood House to replace its ageing computers, with new computers and tables, and creating a tech learning hub for the community.

Trevor Eddy is the volunteer Treasurer and after a major commercial development began to threaten the existence of the Clota Cottage Neighbourhood House, Trevor decided to step in. He led a media and face-to-face campaign that secured compensation, returned the neighbourhood house to a firm financial footing and brought the community back together.

The house is just one of the many causes Trevor supports. He volunteers, consults and advocates for ten other organisations and was named Chisholm Volunteer of the Year in 2017 and Whitehorse Citizen of the Year in 2019.

“I don’t see myself as a hero but an advocate for those who don’t have a voice. I think this says I am making a difference and that’s important to me,” he says.

“The new computers we purchased with the grant have been a godsend since lockdown, and we also purchased some new tables – all we are missing are the people.”

Currently the Clota Cottage Neighbourhood House is closed due to Government restrictions, however, the passionate team continues their positive work in the community, including helping their most isolated participants through regular phone calls, delivering small gift packages and conducting Zoom/Teams sessions to run online bingo games and other activities.
