Tarocash: Inside the Tarocash turf club
Spring racing is more than a day at the track. It is the build-up, the group chat, the first look at the crowd and the moment the whole outfit comes together. Turf Club host, Russell White, guides Lachie, Kain, Will, Rahui, Ben and Alex through the key men’s race-day dress codes.
The Turf Club rule is simple. Start with the race day, know the dress code, then decide how formal, colourful or relaxed the outfit should feel. The Spring Racing Carnival dress codes at a glance:
- Derby Day - Monochrome, formal and texture-led.
- Melbourne Cup - Colour and pattern, kept under control.
- Ladies Day - Soft colour, lighter tailoring and warm details.
- Stakes Day - Relaxed tailoring and smart separates.
Derby Day: Monochrome sets the pace
Derby Day opens the major Spring Racing Carnival week with the most recognisable men’s dress code: black, white and grey. The palette may be restricted, but the atmosphere is anything but. This is the day of crisp entrances, considered details and tailoring that looks strong from every angle.
At the Turf Club, Russell’s Derby Day styling session with Lachie showed how to follow the monochrome tradition without defaulting to the obvious black suit. Lachie’s white Lumina linen blazer and matching pleated pant flipped the expected formula. A black Quantum Slim Non-Iron Shirt, black silk tie, pocket square and polished black shoes created the contrast.
Lachie’s Derby Day Look
White linen tailoring. Black shirt. Black accessories. A fresh Derby Day outfit for men who understand the rule but do not want to look like everyone else.
Kain pushed the mood towards formal with black double-breasted tailoring, a silver shirt and a white pocket square. In a room built around styling transformations, his sharper look showed the difference structure can make. Same monochrome family. Stronger formality. A completely different presence.
Kain’s Derby Day Look
Black Spencer Double Breasted Suit. Silver shirt. Black floral tie. White pocket square. A structured look that keeps the palette tight and lets the tailoring lead.
Derby Day dress code explained in one line: keep the colour tight, then let fabric, cut and finishing details carry the look.
Melbourne Cup: Colour enters the conversation
Melbourne Cup is the carnival at full volume. The crowd is brighter, the accessories are bolder and the day gives men more permission to show personality. That does not mean wearing every colour at once. The sharpest Melbourne Cup outfits choose one direction and build around it.
Will’s Melbourne Cup Look
Sage Civik Suit. Crisp white shirt. Tonal tie and pocket square. A confident Melbourne Cup statement that lets one clear colour direction lead the look.
Ben’s Melbourne Cup Look
Blue Elston Suit. Silver shirt. Navy floral accessories. Chocolate shoes. A confident Melbourne Cup look that brings in colour and pattern without making every piece compete.
Alex’s Melbourne Cup Look
Mid-blue Delton Slim Check Suit. Sky shirt. Navy tie. Chocolate suede loafers. Colour and pattern with a controlled tonal finish.
What to wear to Melbourne Cup: choose a suit with a clear colour point of view, then give every other piece a supporting role.
Ladies Day: Soft colour, sharp finish
Ladies Day, also known as Oaks Day, shifts into a lighter colour palette. Pastels, natural tones and considered accessories suit the mood, but the men’s dress code still calls for polish, just in a softer colour story.
Rahui’s Ladies Day Look
A natural check suit gives soft colour somewhere to sit. The pink shirt leads; the floral, natural and gold details support it. Light in mood. Still properly tailored.
Lachie’s Ladies Day Look
Natural Cove Blazer and Pant. Sky Quantum Slim Non-Iron Shirt. Tonal floral accessories. Chocolate suede loafers. A light, polished Ladies Day look with soft colour leading the finish.
Ladies Day dress code for men, made simple: begin with light or neutral tailoring, choose one soft colour to lead and keep the finish warm, tonal and polished.
Stakes Day: Relaxed, not underdressed
The Stakes Day mood is social, easy and ready for a final celebration. The men’s smart casual dress code allows more freedom, but that doesn’t mean tees, jeans and everyday sneakers. Relaxed tailoring is the answer.
Alex’s Stakes Day Look
Navy blazer. Natural tailored pant. Sky shirt. Suede loafer. The easiest way to look race-day ready without wearing a matching suit.
Kain’s Stakes Day Look
Natural Jaeden linen jacket. Black Ace tailored pant. A relaxed race-day outfit with enough contrast and structure to still feel considered.
Stakes Day style explained: choose a blazer, tailored pants, a crisp shirt and polished shoes. Keep the fit deliberate. Let the colour feel easy. Finish the look.
