Mother's Day gift ideas using the 5 love languages

How much thought could you honestly say you put into Mother’s Day? Many of us are guilty of the last minute dash to the shops, but if the thought is the thing that counts, maybe that’s where we should be putting our time in.

One way to apply more thought this Mother’s Day is to figure out what your mum or partner's love language is (depending on who you're buying for). Ever read the book The 5 Love Languages? It’s totally a thing. Let me run it down for you.

Apparently, everyone has one primary love language (a.k.a. the way they show and like to receive love) and one secondary one. The languages are receiving gifts, quality time, words of affirmation, acts of service and physical touch. And the best way to guess your mum's love language is to observe how she shows you love.

If she is always saying beautiful things to you, then she’s probably all about the words of affirmation. And if she’s an epic gift-giver, then she probably likes presents.

Once you figure out what your mum’s language is, check below for our Mother’s Day suggestions.

Words of Affirmation mum

Write a list of all the things that are fabulous about her. Get the kids to pitch in. Nothing is too big or small. Does she always have ice cream in the freezer for the little ones? Does she smell like flowers? Did she buy you your first camera and now you’re a photographer? Dig deep and find some words for her – it will make her day.

Acts of Service mum

Unfortunately, if this is the mum in your life, you may need to get your hands dirty. Clean the house (or pay someone to do it), put away the laundry or make that spreadsheet she has been asking you for help with. Fix something that’s broken, make her something you know she wants or whip her up a gorgeous meal. Most importantly, think hard before you decide what to do.

Affection mum

This lady is all about the loving, so make sure you set aside a decent amount of time for that. Get the kids to give her a massage or set up a movie in bed. Keep in mind that the best thing you can give this mum is a big hug and thank your lucky stars you don’t have to clean anything.

Quality Time mum

This mum just wants to hang out, so pack a picnic basket, put the phones away and head somewhere special. The only thing you need to do is be present and it shouldn’t be too hard, right?

Gifts mum

There’s no shame in liking gifts, so if this is your mum, have some fun with it. Get the kids to make her some pet rocks or art for the walls, or buy a bunch of little things and wrap them up beautifully together.

And if you’re still lost? Every mum wants more sleep, photos of them and their kids together and for someone else to put away the laundry.
