Aussie athletes & teams to watch at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games
On 27 June, Westfield was announced as an official partner of the Australian Olympic and Paralympic Teams. This year’s crop of Aussie athletes is set to dazzle at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and with the Games now less than a month away, we’ve compiled a list of 5 Aussie Olympians and teams to watch.
1. The Matildas

The Matildas inspired millions at last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, with Matilda Mania sweeping the nation in the lead-up to their semi-final appearance. All eyes will be on the Matildas once again this year, as the popular team faces Germany, USA and Zambia/Morocco in the Olympic Games Women’s Football Tournament in France. The Matildas kick off their campaign against Germany on 25 July, with their group stage matches taking place in Marseille and Nice. Captained by Steph Catley, and featuring World Cup stars, Mary Fowler, Hayley Raso, Mackenzie Arnold, Ellie Carpenter, Catilin Foord and Mary Fowler, the Matildas will be looking to beat their best-ever fourth place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
2. Jess Fox

As the greatest female canoe slalom athlete in history, Jess Fox is no stranger to success and the pressure of the Olympic Games. With London, Rio and Tokyo under her belt, Paris will be Fox’s fourth Olympic Games and she’s a favourite to win back-to-back gold in the C1 category. She is also in the running for the K1 and kayak cross events, having recently won gold in all three at the Canoe Slalom World Cup event. Jess’ sister, Noemie Fox, has also earned her spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics Games, qualifying for the kayak cross. Double the reasons to cheer!
3. Jeff Dunne

In 2024, breaking (or breakdancing) will make its debut as an Olympic sport. The urban dance style emerged from hip-hop culture in the US in the 1970s and is characterised by acrobatic movements and skillful footwork. The addition of Breaking to the Paris 2024 program is set to garner worldwide attention and intrigue. The events will be in the form of face-to-face solo battles, with dancers improvising and adapting their moves as DJs mix beats in front of nine official judges. Competing in the men’s competition will be 16-year-old Aussie Jeff Dunne, or J-Attack, while Rachael Gunn will represent in the women’s competition.
4. The Dolphins

Following the Australian Swimming Trials in June, an incredible 41-strong swimming squad has been selected to represent Australia in Paris 2024. The massive squad of qualifiers features plenty of young guns, with 23 athletes making their Olympic debut. The team also includes Aussie Swimming royalty, with Emma McKeon, Ariarne Titmus, Bronte Campbell, Cameron McEvoy and Kyle Chalmers. McEvoy and Campbell are both about to dive into their fourth Olympic Games, becoming the fourth and fifth Australian swimmers to do so. The Dolphins won a record 9 gold medals in Tokyo and will again be looking to set the bar for the entire Australian Olympic team.
5. Alex De Minaur

Australia’s Olympic tennis team includes world number 9, Alex De Minaur, who will compete in both singles and doubles in Paris. De Minaur is making his well-deserved Olympic debut, after contracting COVID-19 on the eve of the Tokyo Olympic Games and being ruled out of the Games. De Minaur made the French Open quarterfinals only this month, and is set to return to the familiar Roland Garros from 27 July, as part of the nine-strong tennis team.
Westfield’s partnership with the Australian Olympic and Paralympic teams will see all 37 Westfield centres across Australia transform into Live Sites for our customers to enjoy key events and matches direct from Paris. More information on the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games coming soon.
