Discover the cosmos this July at Australian Geographic

Australian Geographic, Level 2

At Australian Geographic we are so excited to be celebrating fifty years of lunar history this July.

On 20 July 1969, Apollo 11, the first manned space mission to the moon, dropped off two brave cosmic explorers - Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. What had once seemed possible in the imagination of children, as they constructed cardboard rocket ships in their back yards and dreamt of the stars, became real. This was the first time in history that humans had set foot on the surface of the moon. There was now a cosmos of possibilities in space exploration and discovery.

Apollo 11 brought back the first samples from the big floating rock in the sky, 384,400km from Earth. But it also gave us the greatest gift of all - a new generation of dreamers, scientists, explorers and the belief that anything is possible.

At Australian Geographic we encourage you to dream and explore, set your sights on the stars and discover the cosmos. This July, point your telescope and experience the multitude of amazing astronomical events our Southern Hemisphere has to offer.

On 17 July, there will be a full moon. In parts of Australia on 16-17 July, you may be lucky enough to catch the partial lunar eclipse in the early hours of the morning. Another fantastic astronomical event to look out for this month is the Southern Delta Aquarids meteor shower, which will peak around 30 July.

To get the best telescope and viewing advice, come in and see our knowledgeable team in store at Australian Geographic and join us in celebrating fifty years since the first lunar.
