Rather than covering every blemish, natural makeup looks take a more minimalist approach and aim to accentuate your best features. Although this look only requires a few makeup must-haves, the seemingly endless options have left many of us feeling a tad overwhelmed when it comes to shopping for everyday makeup to achieve a barely-there look. Much like an overflowing makeup bag, or a packed top drawer, the beauty industry is forever exploding with new products. Whether you’re after beginner’s tips, or just want to go back-to-basics, use this beauty guide to find the new MVPs of your makeup routine and achieve that natural, glowing look.
Essential to protecting your skin against UV, sunscreen (or a moisturiser containing SPF) should be applied before primer and before you even consider reaching for any makeup. Thankfully, thick and greasy sunscreens are a thing of the past and it’s now easier than ever to find one that’s lightweight and invisible under foundation.
Another essential step, primer helps your makeup last all day and acts like a protective barrier to your skin. Just like the name suggests, primers prepare the skin for foundation to be applied, by filling in creases and pores and creating a smooth surface.
Whilst the goal of natural-looking makeup is not to hide every imperfection, there is no need to skip this step if you feel more confident with a spot of concealer to correct colour and eliminate redness.
The right foundation is key to achieving that barely-there, natural look. Opt for a lightweight foundation, BB cream or even a tinted moisturiser.
To add some dimension to your natural look, blush or bronzer are a sure-fire way to accentuate those cheekbones. Whilst blush and bronzer can be used in combination, it’s best to choose just one in this instance and remember, less is more if it’s a natural look you’re after. Blush is the go-to for a touch of softer, fresh-faced colour on the cheeks, while bronzer will add subtle, sun-kissed definition and glow.
When applied sparingly and paired with mascara, eyeliner can define the eyes and actually help to give them a more natural look. You’ll need less mascara and therefore, there will be less chance of unwanted clumping and smudging. Go for a simple pencil liner and apply to the top lash line, connecting the dots in small, quick strokes.
The backbone of the makeup kit. Apply a little after your eyeliner and avoid going too heavy to achieve a softer, natural look. You’ll want to look for a mascara that lengthens and defines each lash with minimal coats to avoid clumping.
A little effort in the eyebrow department goes a long way, as they frame our entire face and bring out our eyes. Fuller ‘down-to-earth' brows are still the brow of the moment. To create a natural look, use a light hand and work up the colour gradually. Create shape with small, hair-like strokes and avoid a sharp arch.
A soft, neutral eye shadow in nude, or even subtle coral, will complete this everyday makeup look and give an additional natural glow.
