LOEWE: LOEWE opens new store in Sydney
Loewe, Level 3
On April 24, LOEWE will open a new store in Sydney. Located on the third floor of the renowned Westfield shopping centre, the 245 sqm space will host a full offering of women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, bags, accessories, shoes, small leather goods, eyewear, jewellery and scarves and shawls alongside perfumes and home scents.
Taking its cues from the CASA LOEWE concept, LOEWE Westfield deploys a design language that melds the intimacy of an art collector’s home with the elegance of retail. Its striking façade is composed of a see-through lattice and undulating expanses of glazed tiles, creating an endlessly changing play of natural light, colour and texture. The colours deployed throughout the store evoke the beauty and majesty of the nearby Pacific, with handmade tiles in shades of blue, emerald and jade reminiscent of sunlight filtering through the waves or vibrant marine life hidden beneath the surface. These tactile ceramics are complemented by materials including concrete, oak wood, brass and turned iron.
A series of curated furniture choices further enhance the space, opulent Berin club chairs and Gerrit Thomas Rietveld’s Utrecht armchairs contrasting with the delicacy of Isamu Noguchi’s washi paper Akari 33N Light Sculpture. Various LOEWE signature pieces are also present, including Spanish style black iron martini tables, podiums in various finishes including marble, and a puffer bench showcasing the brand’s exceptional leatherwork. Underfoot, a series of bespoke wool rugs made in Spain feature reproductions of tapestries by British textiles artist John Allen: the bright, bucolic scenery of Seven Sisters, Tin Mine and Rowsley Clump bringing extra flashes of colour.
Also present are a selection of works from LOEWE’s international anthology of art, craft and design. These include a series of formally inventive ceramic vases by South African potter-artist Hylton Nel, and Mexican artist Andrés Arna’s LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize winning piece I Only Know What I have Seen (2023): a life-size ceramic sculpture probing at the duality between the natural world and the realities of the interior, imaginary realm. On the walls, British neo-romantic artist John Minton’s Street Scene is at once lively and melancholy, while Indian painter Mahesh Baliga’s Diwali Light elevates an ordinary, glittering moment in time.
