Westfield Sydney is proud to support children living with autism and their families, through our partnership with local charity Giant Steps Sydney.
Autism is a lifelong, pervasive developmental disorder that affects the way an individual relates to his or her environment and their interaction with other people. The main areas of difficulty are in social communication, social interaction and restricted or repetitive behaviours and interests. People on the autism spectrum may also have unusual sensory interests (such as staring intently at moving objects), sensory sensitivities (including avoiding everyday sounds and textures) and intellectual impairment or learning difficulties. An estimated one in 100 people has autism - almost 230,000 Australians.
Although researchers are desperately searching for answers, no definitive cause or cure is know. Early intervention, together with specific and ongoing specialised education ensures the best long term outcomes for each individual.
Giant Steps was founded to help educate children and families experiencing autism and to alleviate associated stress. Through its multifaceted approach, Giant Steps aims to ensure that each child is given the opportunity to reach their full potential. In 2015, Giant Steps Sydney celebrated its 20th year of operation.
Each Saturday, Westfield Sydney operates a fairy floss cart to surprise and delight customers and encourage them to donate to Giant Steps Sydney. Visit the cart on Pitt Street Mall, near Hype DC, to help support children living with autism.
