Barbeques Galore: Barbeque buying guide

Story

Barbeques Galore: Barbeque buying guide

There are so many types of barbeques available in the market, it can be difficult to decide which one is right for you and your entertaining needs. Barbeques Galore is a specialist retailer and we have put together a comprehensive buying guide to help you when going through the decision making process.

What type of fuel do I need?

We know that convenience is important, but that’s not going to keep you from enjoying the Great Australian BBQ dream. If efficient cooking times is at the top of your list, consider an electric, LPG or natural gas barbeque; or a specialty set-and-forget pellet smoker so you can keep your guests company instead of the barbie. Or if you’re all about bringing that chargrilled baby back, then get the fire started with charcoal or Heat Beads.

Gas barbeques

  • Gas BBQs heat up quickly, similar to a gas stove top, and offer a high level of heat control
  • Available in either natural gas or LPG inthe majority of barbeques
  • LPG BBQs utilise a gas bottle which are available from selected Barbeques Galore stores or Swap 'N' Go locations

Portable BBQs
If your idea of outdoor entertaining means firing up your portable BBQ in the great outdoors, then we’ve got the perfect solution for you. Whether you’re cooking up a sausage sizzle at the park or even roasting the Christmas turkey for your family camping trip, we have the portable BBQ for you.

Want the best of both worlds? Consider a portable BBQ with a cart option, letting you detach the BBQ when on the go and re-attach for convenient at home cooking.

Freestanding BBQs
Freestanding barbeques offer outstanding cooking results and a wide range of barbequing capabilities. Leave your oven inside and take a step outdoors to a whole new world of perfectly seared steaks, succulent Sunday roasts, smoked meats and even cakes.

For the the most versatile option, the Freestanding range of barbeques comes available with a hood allowing you to extend your cooking capabilities to include not only grilling, frying but to bake, roast, cook pizza and smoke as the hood traps heat and the barbeque acts like an oven. You can also extend your purchase of accessories to include a rotisserie.

Free standing BBQs are also available in a flat plate design, the flat plate is considered the traditional Australian barbeque ideal for cooking sausages, steaks and the big Aussie breakfast including pancakes. This is a no fuss quick and easy barbeque that will get the job done. Some models come with detachable legs.

Built-in BBQs
More than just a barbeque for grilling; installing a built in barbeque will help transform your patio or deck into an outdoor kitchen and entertaining area that will not only increase your living space, but will improve the value of your home.

The most versatile option in a barbeque. A hood on your barbeque allows you to extend your cooking capabilities to include not only grilling, frying but to bake, roast, cook pizza and smoke, as the hood traps heat and the barbeque acts like an oven. You can also extend your purchase of accessories to include a rotisserie. The built-in version does not come with a stand or cart so you can build it into your outdoor room, saving money on the purchase price of the barbeque too!

Determining your gas type
Gas Barbeques run on either natural gas or LPG (propane), which create virtually identical results. It’s important to be completely confident about this decision before you purchase a BBQ as converting from one fuel type to another should be performed only by a licensed professional, and doing so can void the warranty from certain BBQ brands. Because both fuels cook similarly, your decision should come down to availability and convenience. LPG BBQs utilise a gas bottle which are available from selected Barbeques Galore stores or Swap 'N' Go locations.

Gas BBQ sizes
Identifying how many people you’ll be cooking for, and how frequently, will give you a good gauge of the size of your BBQ. You could have your party of eight queue for food around your 2-burner barbie if they don’t mind the wait. Or it’ll be a fun feast for your party of two, if you’ve got a 6-burner.

Most people prefer the 4-burner gas BBQs because it’s a flexible choice for cooking for a family or party.

Gas BBQ burners
Gas barbeques come with different types of burners, for example: cast iron which make for powerful and even heating or stainless steel for durability. Some barbeques come with enamel coated cast iron burners which keeps them from corroding.

The burners on each barbeque model also come with different output of megajoules. The output of megajoules from the burners will determine the amount of heat in the barbeque.

Burner ignition is an important part of firing up the barbeque, ask your sales representative if the barbeque comes with independent flame thrower ignition which means each burner will light first time every time. Flame thrower ignition with cross lighting will light all the burners at once. Having flame thrower ignition will cut down your service calls for your barbeque and give you peace of mind when starting the barbeque.

Charcoal and specialty BBQs

  • Charcoal and specialty BBQs are great for barbeque enthusiasts who are happy to put in a bit more time
  • Takes a little more time to heat up, and thus cook
  • Helps keep food moist while imparting a unique smokey flavour into the food

Charcoal and specialty BBQ range

Portable Charcoal BBQs
Easy charcoal cooking on the go and at home, perfect for small areas such as court yards, apartment balconies and small backyards. Portable Charcoal barbeques are also great for camping, road trips, picnicking, and other outdoor ventures. Portable Charcoal BBQs let you take that nice smokey taste with you wherever you go!

Kamado BBQs
Chasing the ultimate in charcoal cooking? Then look no further than the Kamado range of Barbeques. Kamados are an all-in-one barbeque, covering smoking, grilling, barbequing and can even work as an oven.

Kamados have a unique shape and feature a thick-walled, heat resistant shell that locks in smoke and moisture at any temperature. This design allows the cooking process to create amazingly juicy food with a minimal use of fuel.

Kettle BBQs
Perfect for anyone, from a hardcore griller to someone who occasionally likes to try something different, a kettle BBQ grill provides a multitude of options making an exceptional addition to your outdoor cooking lifestyle.

Kettles are a BBQ made for every backyard and patio. Whether you’re cooking in a small courtyard or big backyard, you can always enjoy the delicious smoky flavours of a charcoal BBQ.

Offset Smoker BBQs
Get serious about low and slow barbecuing with the Offset Smoker range. Built with heavy duty steel construction and heat resistant high temperature paint, these bad boys will get your meats cooking juicy and tender brisket, slow cooked ribs or pulled pork.

The Offset Smoker works by using wood-fire or charcoal in the offset box, while cooking your meat slowly and gently over a a few hours. Watch the required cooking temperature with either a built-in heavy duty temperature gauge on the firebox or via a separate thermometer, while you relax with a beer or glass of wine.

Pellet Smoker BBQs
A pellet smoker lets you cook your favourite BBQ while imparting the flavours of natural hardwood pellets, such as mesquite, cherry, and apple. A Pellet Smoker differs from an Offset Smoker through the use of a hopper containing the hardwood pellets and as such automating the feeding process.

Bullet Smoker BBQs
Versatility is at the heart of the Bullet Smoker BBQ range, which is capable of smoking, roasting and grilling. This range of barbecues can be transformed from low ‘n’ slow smokers to a versatile adjustable height grill, with simple removal of the waterpan. The grill can also be adjusted to three different levels, depending on your requirements, ensuring you have full control over your cook. Never burn your food again!

Pellets and charcoal
Pellets are available as hardwood, or made of compacted wood. Pellets are also available in a range of flavours such as mesquite, cherry, and apple. Woodfired cooking is a way of life, nothing tastes like it because nothing is like it. Real wood, real smoke, real flavour - everytime!

Charcoal Briquettes are generally less expensive than their pellet counterpart and will generally burn for a longer period of time and thus less fuel is used per barbeque. Charcoal Briquettes are also available in a range of flavours such as Applewood, Hickory and Mesquite.

Electric barbeques

  • The perfect option to choose when gas or solid fuel BBQs cannot be used
  • Perfect for use on an apartment balcony or where space is limited
  • Offering a simple setup, just plug in and get barbequing

Electric Barbeques are somewhat different than other types of BBQs because they need to be plugged in to work. However, this also makes them the most easily accessible way to barbeque. Electric BBQs are the perfect option for anyone who lives in an apartment and is unable to have a Gas, Charcoal or Pellet BBQ.

Another advantage to Electric BBQs is that they heat up very quickly saving you time, and since they usually plug straight into a outlet, there is no need to worry about running out of gas or other fuels. Electric BBQs generally require little maintenance as well so are perfect for anyone who wants to spend more time barbequing than cleaning!

The electrice difference
An Electric Barbeque can have some real advantages over its Gas, Charcoal, and Pellet counterparts. To simplify what these advantages are, we've come up with a list of the ones we think are the most important for this category of BBQ:

  • Electric BBQs turn on instantly and get hot very quickly
  • Can be started with a push of a button or turn of a knob, no need to worry about lighting a fire
  • Require very little maintenance, just a clean!
  • Depending on the type of Electric BBQ and what you're cooking they can be used indoors

What is your budget?

Your gourmet grill skills shouldn’t be limited by your budget. We can assure you that whether you choose to barbeque, grill, bake, roast, smoke, stir-fry, rotisserie or sausage sizzle, we’ll have the right barbeque to meet your budget.

Entry level BBQs can be priced between $100 to $400, while mid-range BBQs are between $500 to $1000. These two price ranges would give you more economical value, and straightforward cooking. The higher end price range BBQs $1000-$10,000 can get more sophisticated with a combination style of cooking and unique features like burner technology, higher quality grade fireboxes and accessories.
