Tanna Tribe's best arts & crafts activities to entertain kids
We caught up with Candice Tanna, super mum to FOUR incredible kids (with gorgeous blue eyes no less), to find out her parenting tips and tricks on how she keeps her kids – affectionately known as the Tanna Tribe – entertained with fun, crafty activities. Read on to find out more.
What are some ways you keep your kids entertained at home, without resorting to TV or electronic devices?
Our kids are three, five, eleven and thirteen years old, so it takes a lot of effort to find things that entertain them all. We are big on games that we can all play as a family. We have an outdoor basketball hoop. We all love to get out there and challenge each other to a game or two – while of course making it a little easier for the girls. We also love board games, building with LEGO and creative play.
What type of activities do the kids get involved in?
The kids are so artsy (I’ll claim they get that from their Mumma!). They will spend hours drawing, colouring and painting on their own. Painting is their absolute favourite activity, so when I get their paint and tools out it really makes their day! They had endless hours of fun on the iCando Dexluxe 5-in-1 Activity Easel, which is quick to assemble and includes spill-resistant paint cups (a huge bonus for Mum!). I had a fun time shopping for art supplies to go with the easel from Kidstuff and Creative Play Resources.
Here are my top picks: The I CAN DO – Poster Paints 6 Pack provides primary-coloured paints which are essential for a budding painter. The Easi-Grip 3 in 1 Crayons Set of 12 are brightly coloured, water-based crayons which are super smooth and silky. They can be used as a crayon, oil pastel or as a watercolour with a wet paintbrush (how cool is that). The kids also love playing with the First Creations – Maxi Markers, specifically designed for young children to grip them easily in their hands. The set comes with 5 bright and vibrant colours to ensure endless hours of creativity.
Do you have any family activities that you particularly love doing together?
We live close to the beach, so heading to the beach for the day is our favourite thing to do as a family. The kids swim, make sandcastles, collect shells and if it’s calm enough, we take the kayaks down for a leisure ride too.
Where do you look to if you need some creative inspiration?
I follow some great Instagram accounts that share really cool, creative ideas for kids. Mostly art ones. Some are kindergarten teachers who share their creative educational ideas too, which I find super helpful. There’s so much to learn from them! Some of my favourites are @learningresources, @teaching_tinks and @creativeplayideas.
What are some tips for other mums that you live by?
Kids grow up so fast! I really treasure making the most out of quality time together and always carving time out to spend with my kids, especially since my oldest is turning fourteen soon. I don’t want to miss any precious moments with them worrying about unimportant things.
The house will unfortunately never be spotless, so you’ll always have washing and housework to do. But you’ll never get this precious time back with your kids once they are all grown up. So, make the most of it and have fun!
