Steve Cordony shares his tips for a dreamy Christmas tablescape

Setting the table for Christmas lunch is one of my highlights of the festive season. For me, this year’s Christmas look and styling will be all about warmth and texture. Using earthy tones and rustic, handmade textures is one of the biggest trends at the moment, and particularly poignant given the year we have had. Rust tones, with natural linen napery, simple native floral, timber elements (like we have used for the pepper mill), and introducing fruit and vegetables, conjures up a feeling of a relaxed celebration.

What is the secret to achieving the perfect tablescape?

I love to add unexpected elements, as it’s the small details that often make the biggest impact. A hand-written place card, adding seasonal elements that represent Christmas, like pomegranates and pears, and layering food elements are all great ways to create a magical tablescape.

My go-to Christmas colour pairing

I love the traditional Christmas colours, so my go-to palette is any one colour within the red/green family, which ranges from rust to red, sage to grass green, and always adding a metallic element such as silver, gold or bronze. By extending the colour range in this way, it’s easy to add a modern twist, while also sticking to a classic Christmas theme.

Tableware tips for a classic Christmas look

For classic dinnerware, I always love a simple white set, with a simple border or linear contrast. This should always be a staple, as it allows you to add and mix and match any other colour or pattern to switch up the look. It also allows you to add extra colour to the table in the form of cinnamon sticks, Christmas bush, rosemary or eucalyptus, without it clashing with the dinnerware.

My favourite Christmas traditions

Every year, we as a family will go to cut down a real Christmas tree at the start of December. There is nothing like the smell of a freshly-cut tree filling the house. On Christmas Day we nominate one person to be ’Santa’ to hand out the gifts to the whole family, complete with a very ‘Christmassy’ sweater and matching hat! It’s so daggy but it will forever be my favourite tradition from my favourite day of the year.
