Grab and go afternoon tea

Children are starving in the afternoon. It's an ineviatble fact of parenthood, yet it's also one we can feel ill-prepared for, despite being well aware of the consequences. There is an easy way to tackle this, actually there are a few fantastic ways.

Inspired by hungry kids the world over, we came up with some quick and easy snack ideas that can be prepared ahead of time. These are perfect for parents who dread the terrifying 3pm fridge attack, or those trying to feed kids on-the-go between school and afternoon activities.

Grab and Go Snack #1

Egg and Bacon Gluten-Free Muffins

These ‘muffins’ are perfect for a quick energy snack before sports practice. They last for five days in the fridge in a sealed container and depending on your child’s tolerance to vegetables, can be modified in about a million different ways.

For the basic recipe, all you need is eggs, sour cream, cooked bacon, grated cheese and a muffin tray. The only ratio you need to follow is four eggs to one cup of sour cream, but even that is pretty flexible.

Just preheat the oven to 180 degrees, mix the eggs and sour cream in a jug, sprinkle your bacon and cheese into the patty pan, pour the egg mixture over it and bake for 20 minutes.
Other things to add: grated zucchini, mushrooms, onion, chicken, roasted pumpkin, feta, garlic or chorizo.

Grab and Go Snack #2

Dip Jars

The only things you need to make a dip jar is something to dip, and something to dip it in. It’s really that simple. It takes about five minutes to make a bunch of these portion-controlled snacks, and they are the perfect grab and go feed for those busy afternoons.

To Dip: There are so many things you can use for this type of snack, but if you want to keep it to one container, long items are best. Think bread sticks, crisp bread and basically any veggie that can be cut into strips. Chopped carrot and celery will last for about five days in an airtight container in the fridge.

The Dip: Hummus, peanut butter, cream cheese are our top pics for your average kid, but if you have an adventurous child, but the options are endless. You could even create your own dips, and it’s a food group that is almost impossible to mess up!

Grab and Go Snack #3

No Chop Fruit Salad

The idea of eating fruit salad that was cut up three days earlier isn’t exactly inspiring, and that’s why we suggest a no-chop mixture. Whole strawberries, blueberries and grapes last perfectly for five days even when they are sitting on a layer of natural yogurt and honey. You could also try adding mandarin segments or nuts.
