Dry skin in winter? Here's why.

Wintertime can bring cozy sweaters and a good excuse for a hot latte, but it also brings dry itchy skin and many more changes. We sat down with our expert dermal trainer Darlene O’Gara to discuss your top winter skin questions.

Why is dry skin more of a problem in winter?

The cooler, dryer months make a significant difference to how the skin looks and feels as it takes a little extra effort to keep it in tip-top condition. Winter time can be especially hard on sensitive skin and may lead to dryness, cracking or chronic chapped lips.

We often recommend Balense ReBalense Moisture Dry to help increase moisture and hydration while also decreasing sensitivity and irritation of dry, hypersensitive skin. It’s laden with Hyaluronic acid for moisture retention and epidermal conditioning to help change the appearance of dry, tight and itchy skin into smooth, supple and silky-feeling skin.

Can sudden change in temperature exacerbate dryness?

The reason this occurs is because and air conditioner will dehydrate your skin over time and leave it dry. A hydrating mist such as the Balense Balensing Moisture Spritz is perfect for people who work in these conditions to lock the hydration in their skin.

Can hot showers make dry skin worse?

Tempting as hot showers may be on those chilly winter nights, try not to turn up the heat. Hot water is incredibly dehydrating for the skin. Applying moisturiser immediately after bathing and toweling dry to help lock in the moisture on your skin.

Can dry skin be inherited?

No, dry skin is not genetic. It is caused by seasonal changes, incorrect product use and environmental factors.

Are there any treatments you recommend for dry, winter skin?

One of our most popular winter skin treatments are medi-aesthetic peels. All face peels work by removing the outermost layer of dermis (skin) and accelerating your skin cell turnover. The treatment does literally causes your skin to peel. Winter the ideal season to start your series of medi-aesthetic peels as it is easier to avoid the sun during the cooler months.

Our High Performance Microdermabrasion is also an amazing treatment for dry skin types as during the treatment both chemical and mechanical exfoliation techniques are used to help remove any build-up of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. This will also even out skin tone and assist with stimulating the production of collagen within your skin.
