Get Race Day Ready: Oaks Day

Oaks Day, commonly referred to as Ladies Day, falls on Thursday 7 November at Flemington Racecourse.

For the first time ever, the races will start just after lunch, giving everyone a little extra time to get ready and glam up for the day! After the formality of Derby Day and the out-there party style of Melbourne Cup, Oaks Day provides the opportunity to embrace all things pretty and feminine. It’s not just for the ladies either, with men encouraged to lift their style game to new heights and push the fashion limits.

For Oaks Day, you simply can’t go wrong with pink. This season, the brighter the better! So why not opt for a hotter than hot shade of pink. The satin long-sleeved dress from David Jones seen below, styled by Westfield Style Authority Paul, is a perfect choice to channel your more feminine side with its fluid and elegant silhouette. This season, the sleeve takes centre stage with renewed focus on covering the arms and being demure up top. To keep things fresh and edgy, pick a style with a long split to show some skin. And as always, don’t forget your headwear! When it comes to millinery, many women worry that hats don’t suit, but the trick is to play around with how you wear them. The pretty in pink boater hat seen below from Myer is worn at a flattering angle to perfectly frame the face. Add an unexpected clash of colour with your accessories, such as this red clutch from Myer to make the most of the bold colour trend, add some sky-high strappy heels and you’re ready to own the day!

Oaks Day is another opportunity to be daring and try a new trend. Why not step away from the classic dress and opt for a suit, a prevalent trend of the season that will leave you looking and feeling like a boss. As a bonus, with the races being held a little later in the day, you’ll be well prepared at the end of the day when the temperature drops. For Oaks Day, I recommend trying this style in pastels for a more soft and feminine take on the trend. Satin, with its sleek shiny finish has a luxurious feel and is perfect for adding glamour to your look, so the suit seen below from Witchery is a gorgeous choice for the day. When it comes to your millinery, why not channel your inner Blair Waldorf with a padded headband. As styled by Paul, the padded headband seen below from Lovisa adds a contrasting pop of colour, and when worn with matching orange oversized earrings, draws attention to your best feature! I recommend adding a metallic look handbag for added shine, such as the one seen below from Mimco.

For the men, Oaks Day is the time to put your best fashion foot forward. Dress to impress and perhaps catch a filly’s eye in a statement suit. Not a look for wallflowers, this blue, white and red checked suit from Peter Jackson, paired with a contrasting spotted tie is a standout. A busier suit looks best when paired with a simple shirt, such as the old faithful crisp white shirt as styled by Paul below. Don’t forget a nod to what the day is all about with a horse and jockey lapel pin, adding the final touch to your look.

The races are here and it’s time to see how the key trends will be worn and individualised. Keep your eyes peeled… Maybe you’ll be spotted! Watch out for a Spring Racing Carnival wrap up of the best fashion trackside and the trends you can take into the Summer season ahead.
