What is Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr

What is Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is a month-long spiritual journey filled with prayer, charity, family, gratefulness and reflection. It is a time to sympathise with the less fortunate, encourage spiritual reconnection and practice refraining from daily moreish snacks!

As Muslims abstain from food, beverages and smoking from dawn to sunset, they will break their fast with a customary date and water. Substantial meals are then eaten before dawn and after sunset, known as suhoor and iftar.

What is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr is the awaited celebration for the month ending Ramadan and is a special three-day festival known as the 'Breaking of the Fast'. It involves plenty of feasting, lots of presents, and wearing your best clothes. This is the time to make up for your forgone-coffee faces!

In 2019, Ramadan will begin on Sunday 5 May and ends the evening of Tuesday 4 June with Eid celebrations starting on Wednesday 5 June.
