There are a few things most of us do in readiness for the warmer seasons – pack away cosy knits, swap sneakers for sandals, and refresh our swimwear options. We’re proposing an additional revamp – that of your skincare routine. In the same way a coat is no longer seasonally appropriate, it’s best to shelve heavy creams until the weather calls for them. Instead, lightweight (but still hard-working) products should take their place. Not sure where to start? An uptick in sweat and sebum production means congestion and dullness can be an issue for every skin type over spring and summer. For a quick fix, consider adding a chemical exfoliant to your repertoire – they clarify and brighten from the very first use. Choose from a lineup of alpha-hydroxy acids or AHAs like glycolic, lactic or mandelic acids (best for anti-ageing), beta hydroxy acids or BHAs like salicylic acid (best for battling breakouts) or a variety of fruit enzymes (best for sensitive types). You can find these ingredients in everything from cleansers to masks, but serums deliver the most bang for your buck. If you’re after something more potent, microdermabrasion could fit the bill. This salon treatment involves buffing away dead skin cells with a diamond-tipped wand resulting in a smoother, more even-looking complexion with fewer spots and fine lines. It’s impossible to talk about warm weather skincare without mentioning sun protection. Skincare buffs know that high protection sunscreen is a must-have all year round, but it truly comes into its own over the warmer months. Whether you prefer a mineral or ‘chemical’ formula (a misnomer since all skincare – including the ‘natural’ stuff – is made from chemicals), there are loads of options to choose from and at all price points. The best sunscreen for you is one you’ll wear every day, so make sure you like the texture, the smell, and the look and feel before you buy. An SPF of 30 or above is key – anything less won’t last long under the harsh summer sun. Aside from that, ensure you’re wearing a standalone sunscreen. Foundation with SPF doesn’t count because it’s impossible to wear enough of it (½ teaspoon over your face and neck) to achieve protection.
As temps rise, you’ll naturally want to trade in your rich winter creams for something a little more sheer. Hydration is still important in summer – especially when sunning, swimming or simply sitting inside in the air con – so reach for featherlight formulas that pack a punch. Look for serums and gel-creams packed with moisture-boosting ingredients like hyaluronic acid, pro-vitamin B5 (panthenol) and niacinamide. Go for a lighter texture that won’t clog pores. Try pure jojoba oil or a weightless blend formulated for moisture retention. Suffering with deeply dehydrated or chronically dry skin? Collagen supplements, in particular, are having a moment – there’s mounting evidence they can help reduce the look of fine lines and improve skin elasticity. These beauty benefits can theoretically offset the impact of environmental damage to your skin, hair and nails over spring and summer. There are different types of collagen, each with individual benefits, so do your research before you buy. One thing to note: collagen is animal-derived, so not vegan. That said, vegans can try plant-based collagen promoters. These are supplements that are mostly made up of vitamin C, an antioxidant the body uses to produce its own collagen. There’s less data on these products, but many brands have stellar reviews.
We often associate warm weather with radiance, but luminous skin can be the hardest to achieve during the warmer months. Between sun damage, dehydration and diligent sunscreen reapplication, it’s all too easy to end up with a dull complexion. Get things glowy again with targeted skincare, at-home or in-salon treatments. Vitamin C is a great starting point for most skin types – look for a serum or sheet mask containing ascorbic or L-ascorbic acid to reap its brightening benefits. LED, or light-emitting diode therapy uses varying wavelengths of light to help regenerate the skin. It’s incredibly effective at boosting glow, but treatments need to be done regularly to maintain results. Home LED devices are spendy but easier on your wallet over time. Quality varies, so do a little reading and check customer reviews online to find the one that’s best for you.
