Kids in the Kitchen: 4 healthy snacks kids can make by themselves

Running out of ideas for activities that’ll keep the kids occupied? We’re here to help. These healthy snacks are so easy to prepare, the kids can practically make them by themselves. (With your help, of course.) Guaranteed to cure boredom and satisfy their appetites, these kid-friendly snacks are sure to be a hit. Here’s where to start.

Plan a shopping trip

Extend the fun with a family trip to Westfield to pick up your ingredients. Prep the kids beforehand with a list of everything they’ll need, and get their help adding the items to your trolley or basket. (Sneak in your regular shop while you’re at it for a multitasking win.) You'll find everything you need from The Fruit & Deli Co, Willows Quality Meats, Coles, Woolworths, Aldi.

Wash their hands

One skill we’ve all perfected of late is hand hygiene. Remind your kids that step one of every recipe should be giving their hands a good wash with soap and water. Ask your crew to join in singing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song twice to reach the recommended 20-second quota.

Watermelon fruit pizza

Nothing screams summer like a vibrant fruit salad. This creative twist on the classic uses seasonal fruits as makeshift pizza toppings. Choose their favourites to get them onboard.

Add the following ingredients to your shopping list:
• Watermelon
• Greek yoghurt
• Mixed berries (additional fruits optional)


  1. Prepare the mixed berries and any other fruit to use as your 'pizza' toppings. Wash and slice into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Cut the watermelon in half, through the centre. Next, cut a slice 2-4 centimetres thick to use as the ‘pizza’ base. (Younger kids will need your help with this step!)
  3. Cut the watermelon ‘base’ into six or eight equal triangles to mimic pizza slices.
  4. Spread Greek yoghurt over the slices and decorate with toppings. Enjoy!

• Swap Greek yoghurt for whipped cream or hazelnut spread
• Drizzle honey over the slices for an even sweeter treat

Sandwich on a stick

Have fun revamping a lunchtime staple with this quick and simple recipe. Bound to be a hit with the little ones, it’s easily enjoyed at a family picnic or from the comfort of home.

Add the following ingredients to your shopping list:
• Bread
• Thinly sliced meat (ham, chicken, roast beef)
• Cheddar cheese (block)
• Cherry tomatoes
• Lettuce
• Cucumber
• Wooden skewers


  1. Fold the cold cuts in half twice, and slice the cheese into small cubes.
  2. Wash and slice cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce leaves.
  3. Cut the bread into 3cm squares. (Slice off the crusts if desired.)
  4. Arrange the ingredients on skewers in any combination they like. Bon appétit!

• Use cookie cutters to make fun shapes with your ingredients
• Add any other veg they like. Think: capsicum or mushrooms

Tropical fruit icy poles

Fact: An ice block for a snack isn’t a hard sell. Pack a little extra nutrition into their favourite frozen sweet treats with this recipe. It’s customisable, so they can sub-in any fruit they love.

Add the following ingredients to your shopping list:
• Banana
• Mango
• Pineapple
• Passionfruit
• Apple juice or coconut water
• Icy pole moulds or small disposable cups and ice-cream sticks


  1. Rinse, cut and dice the fruit. Place ingredients into a blender or food processor.
  2. Add apple juice or coconut water as required to ensure your mixture isn't too thick - you want to end up with a smoothie like consistency - and blend until well combined and lump-free.
  3. Pour the mixture into icy pole moulds (or disposable cups) and freeze for 45 minutes.
  4. Add wooden ice-cream sticks (you can skip this step if you've used icy pole moulds) and leave for another 4-5 hours or until completely solid.
  5. When it’s time to eat, run the mould or cup under lukewarm water for an easy exit.

• For a creamy treat, substitute apple juice for Greek yoghurt or coconut milk
• Add finely diced fruit or berries after blending for chunkier texture

Hummus and cucumber roll-ups

This eye-catching snack is easy to make and trains your kids' skills with a vegetable peeler. Plus, they’re tasty! One bite will have your mini chefs rolling back to the kitchen for more.

Add the following ingredients to your shopping list:
• Cucumber
• Capsicum
• Hummus


  1. Thinly slice cucumber lengthways with a vegetable peeler and cut capsicum into 4cm strips.
  2. Spread hummus across each of the cucumber slices.
  3. Place capsicum slice at one end of the cucumber strip.
  4. Roll up and serve.


• Swap out hummus for cream cheese or a dip of your choice
• Substitute capsicum for celery strips or carrot for added crunch
