Kids in the kitchen: no-bake Christmas recipe

Cooking with kids is all sorts of fun, but when the mercury starts to rise, it’s nice to have some no-bake recipes on hand.

We asked our resident parenting blogger Patchwork Cactus to get busy with some Christmas recipes and here’s what she came up with (with the help of her five- and seven-year-olds).

Santa strawberry tarts and a spiced mango smoothie

One of my main tips when it comes to cooking with kids is to keep it simple! They have very short attention spans and a recipe with too many steps probably won’t hold their interest.

But these recipes couldn’t be any easier; there is almost no prep involved, so you can get straight into the best part. The tarts are inspired by the very popular Santa hat strawberries, but are much more suited to an Aussie summer because they don't melt.

Ingredients

  • Pre-made tart shells
  • Icing – we used the pre-made kind
  • Sprinkles
  • Strawberries
  • Frozen mango
  • Milk of your choice
  • Chai powder

Directions

  1. Head out to your local Westfield and grab the ingredients and some piping bags.
  2. Fill a piping bag with half a can of icing and cut the tip off with some scissors.
  3. Have the kids pipe the icing into each tart shell, then sprinkle the hundreds and thousands over the top.
  4. Now slice the tops off the strawberries and place them on a plate upside down, so the kids can pipe a little pom-pom on top of each.
  5. When you’re ready to serve, pop the strawberries on top of the tarts. If you put them on too far in advance, the strawberry juice will start to discolour the sprinkles.
  6. Now blend your frozen mango with a teaspoon of chai powder and some milk and serve!
