The ultimate party season makeup with MAC
Party season: it's all about late nights, glittering dresses and clinking champagne glasses, so it's only fitting that your makeup matches!
Often we get so wrapped up in our outfit for Christmas parties and New Year's Eve that we tend to forget about our makeup, even though it's just as much a part of our outfit as the clothes. It's a shame, because makeup around party season is SO FUN, with all the bold lips, sparkly highlight and even sparklier eyes!
This week, I headed into MAC to chat about this year's hottest trends in party season makeup and get some insider tips on makeup clutch essentials and how to achieve party-ready makeup in five minutes flat. Naturally, I had my MAC makeup artist Dani give me a lesson in her #1 party season makeup look too!
Alyce: So, what are the key looks in party season makeup this year?
Dani: Firstly, the smokey eye, in either your classic grey and black, or in something a bit more festive, like plums and coppers. People are loving the shimmering eye look too, where you can take your pick from metallic shadows in every colour under the sun. Finally, the classic winged liner and bold lip combo is still super popular, because it works for everyone and everywhere!
I decide to go with a shimmering smokey eye in bronze/copper tones, with a nude lip and thick lashes!
A: We're heading out for a big night. What are our getting-ready essentials?
D: Definitely these products... they are my secret weapons!
- Pro Longwear Foundation – it's waterproof, so works well in warmer climates, plus it's great for photos!
- Fix+ Hydrating Mist – it can be applied directly onto your makeup to keep it looking dewy all night long.
- Prep + Prime Lip Primer – a must under your lipstick!
- 3 Lashes – what's party season without a set of volumised lashes?!
- Mineralize Skinfinish in Gold Deposit – the ultimate highlighting product for that J-Lo-inspired glow.
- In Extreme Dimension Mascara – carry in your purse for touch-ups.
A: One of those lifelong questions: how do we get our smokey eye looking like it's makeup artist-applied?
D: The trick is using three eyeshadows! Choose a heavier, darker base, like our Pro Longwear Paint Pot. Go for a matte shadow for the outer corner and crease, add a shimmering shadow for the inner corner and blend, blend, blend! If you like a heavy smokey eye, smudge a darker shadow into your lower lash line too.
A: We've got plans straight after work and only have a few minutes to get ready. What's the fastest way to give ourselves a makeover?
D: Easy! Pop on a set of lashes and apply a bright, bold lip. You'll be feeling party-ready in no time!
A: Once we're out, is there anything we can do to make sure our look lasts all night long?
D: Before you even apply your makeup, make sure you use a good primer, like our Prep + Prime Natural Radiance Primer and Prep + Prime Lip Primer. Carry our Blot Film in your purse to freshen your makeup and also your chosen lipstick shade for touch-ups. My other rule? You can never have too much highlighter!
A: It's a case of which came first, the chicken or the egg... Should we be choosing our outfit or our makeup first?
D: I find it easier to choose my outfit first and base my makeup look around that. When you do your makeup, rather than applying all your usual products, think about what you're wearing – the colours, the vibe – and choose your products from there. It will bring your whole look together!
A: Bronzer, highlighter and contour are obviously a huge part of party makeup. Is there a trick to applying them?
D: My secret trick is to use a couple of shades. I like using a matte bronzer, like our Bronzing Powder in Give Me Sun, then applying a bronze highlighter, like our Mineralize Skinfinish in Gold Deposit on top. Chisel those cheekbones by applying with a brush!
A: Do you have any favourite lipstick shades that are perfect for a night out?
D: Yes! I love our lipstick in Blankety pictured above for something nude, or Red Rock or Lady Danger for a pop of red.
A: Okay, it's the morning after the night before. What products will have us looking and feeling fresh again?
D: You'll be dehydrated, so first use the Charged Water Face and Body Lotion to restore your skin. I also love the Charged Water Hydration Mist, which can be sprayed over your face whenever it's feeling a little dry. Of course, a concealer is also a must for those under-eye circles – my favourite is the Prep + Prime Highlighter in Bright Forecast.
Voila! Thanks to my MAC makeup artist Dani for giving me my ultimate party season look!
