THE STYLIST DIARIES | Spring/Summer trends with Annabel Falco

Ahhhh September… otherwise known as the “January” of the Fashion Industry. The month that defines trends, transforms wardrobes and leaves us lusting after the new season “it” shoe/ bag/ print.

As the Spring/ Summer 2020 fashion shows unfold around the world, certain trends begin to form and it’s only a matter of time before you find yourself heading to your local Westfield for a fashion update.

While these trends often seem ambiguous and scary at first, you can guarantee the High Street will re-interpret these couture looks into palatable portions where a contemporary spin on a simple belt, heel or bag will eventually win over the masses.

For those wondering what their Spring/ Summer wardrobes and Pinterest boards will look like, see below for a perfectly categorised and clarified list of 2020’s hottest trends.

As a Westfield Stylist, I couldn’t help but link to some of my favourite versions of each trend (currently available at your closest centre) and “pre-style” these for your fashion convenience.

Remember, the key to any #ootd is confidence so have fun and don’t take these TOO seriously. If you ever need a fashionable shoulder to lean on, your very own Westfield Stylist is only a website click away…

The Colour Palette

Neutrals are re-worked this season with the delicious additions of “Mustard” yellow, “Chive” green, “Cinnamon” brown and “Saffron” orange. According to Pantone’s predictions, these Summer shades will best compliment our tans and sun-streaked hair where there is the perfect tone or shade for everyone. Best worn as a linen set or cotton maxi-dress, ensure your palette does all the talking with a minimalist approach to styling.

The Silhouette

Shannon Doherty, (vintage) Jennifer Aniston and Alicia Silverstone remain hot fashion property, with 90’s influences ruling the runways and boutique racks. Twin Sets, double denim, silk-slip dresses, oversized layers and baggy trousers continue to define our wardrobe silhouettes so if you haven’t yet embraced the 90’s movement, now is your chance!

A simple tank singlet tucked into wide-leg trousers; layering tees under your slip dresses; high-waisted denim and sneakers styled back with everything are just some of the ways to incorporate this trend without overdoing it. The key is to embrace one of these styling elements and keep the rest simple.

The Shoe

Two words: Bottega Veneta. If you haven’t come across this designer then a quick Google search or Insta-stalk will have you instantly up to date. Strappy, white and with a sharp, square toe is the shoe style of the season where a quick trip to Tony Bianco will have you looking on-trend in no time. Think “barely there” when it comes to heels and add a platform when it comes to flats. Style back with everything from cocktail dresses and suiting through to denim jeans and cotton dresses.

The Bag

Time to clear the clutter ladies because this season’s “it” bag won’t have room for much more than your phone, key and a lipstick (the essentials really…). These itty bitty accessories are structured and simple with a chain top handle for extra fashion brownie points. Oroton have this category nailed with similar and more economic versions available from Zara.

The Print

Not for the faint hearted, this season’s print is one to divide… tie dye is back in bold form with everything from dresses, tees and bucket hats embracing this colourful clash.

Never fear, for those who simply want to “dip their toe in”, try styling a tie dye tee with fitted trousers and a simple heel for a sophisticated twist on this trend. One word of advice: keep the silhouettes and styling simple to avoid looking like an extra from “That 70’s Show”.

The Headpiece

Forget clips! They are soooooo 2019! Spring/ Summer 20 is all about the headband with Witchery, Seed Heritage and Zara nailing this haute hair trend. Spring Racing season will make for your perfect hair-do debut where everything from simple suiting to elaborate dresses will match well.
