You glow girl! How to get glowing skin naturally
We don’t need to tell you glowing skin is in. But this season, it’s time to put down the highlighters and dewy foundations and let your naturally glowing skin shine through.
Healthy skin that is radiant, clear and smooth not only looks good, it makes your makeup routine easier (or non-existent) and gives you a great confidence boost, too.
So where do we sign up? These are the essential tips you need to know to get glowing skin, sans make-up.
1. Find out your skin type and use it to your advantage
The reason your skin isn’t living up to your glowing expectations might be as simple as you’re using the wrong formulas for your skin type. The best way to determine your skin type is to wash your face, then leave it bare for a few hours. How does it look? If it’s shiny or oily, then no surprise, you have oily skin. If it feels tight with flaky patches, you have dry skin. If your skin feels smooth and comfortable, then you have normal skin. Now that you know your skin type, choose your formulas accordingly (products should note on the packaging which skin type they’re best suited for).
2. Don’t skip the exfoliant
It’s impossible for your skin to glow when it’s buried under a layer of dead skin cells. That’s why exfoliating is such an important skincare step. But be gentle - harsh scrubs can aggravate skin and mess with its pH level. The best exfoliant for the job is an AHA exfoliant. AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) gently remove the dead skin cells that are dulling your complexion, and they’re granule-free so there’s no risk of irritation. This type of product is called a chemical exfoliant and it’s the new and improved way to exfoliate.
3. Indulge in regular face masks
Masks shouldn’t just be saved for the occasional at-home pamper session; incorporate one into your skincare routine at least twice a week. If you have breakouts, use a clay mask weekly – it’s great for drawing impurities out of your pores. A hydrating sheet mask should be in everyone’s kit, and you should be using it in the morning before applying your make-up. That luminous after-glow should be shared with the world!
4. Eat your way to better skin
We all know that a diet of junk food and sweets can lead to bad skin, but do you know which foods you can eat to improve your complexion? One of the best foods for glowing skin is salmon. A rich source of omega-3 and healthy fats, it has a lot of what your skin needs to fight inflammation, retain moisture and nourish skin from the inside so it produces more natural oils that give skin its glow on the outside. Watercress is another glow-getter. A powerhouse of antioxidants, manganese, carotene and potassium, this leafy veg protects skin from free radicals and helps maintain that elusive radiance.
5. Exercise regularly
It’s not just your body that reaps the rewards of a good workout. Exercise encourages blood circulation, which boosts the natural radiance in your skin and also helps speed up the rate at which your body expels toxins. Just make sure you always shower and cleanse afterwards to prevent sweat from clogging your pores.
