Top 6 foundations for complexion perfection by Stevi Hopkins

Top 6 foundations for complexion perfection by Stevi Hopkins

I have hand picked six of my absolute favourite foundations, spanning various formulas, and finishes. I’ve also chosen brands that are inclusive and offer an extensive range of shades.

Speaking of which, it is important to always visit a store and speak to a staff member when looking for your perfect foundation. Have you ever tried a foundation on, loved it, then worn it for an hour or so and caught yourself in the mirror and nearly fallen over because the colour is not what you applied earlier?

Much like painting a wall, you head to the store, pick your favourite colour, come home, paint the swatch and think ‘that’s not what I picked’ – only to come back once it has dried and think ‘IT’S PERFECT!’.

This is due to a process called oxidisation. When a foundation has oil-controlling properties or is designed to set down to a more matte finish, the formula can darken up to two shades once dried. Sometimes, it can even be our skin types that cause foundations to oxidise. If you are prone to oily skin, the production of oil can react with the foundation and cause it to change colour.

There is a lot of chemistry and magic that goes into formulating the perfect foundation, so sometimes we need to be mindful of this before we commit to buying what we think is the perfect colour for us.

And remember; when in doubt – ask for a sample!

M.A.C - Studio Fix Fluid

Available at David Jones $54 (64 shades available).

Natural matte finish, oil controlling, long wearing formula, medium/buildable coverage.

It has to be the first thing I mention – this product comes in a whopping 64 shades!

In my opinion, M.A.C Cosmetics were the pioneers in inclusive cosmetics and embracing individuality. Their philosophy is “all ages, all races, all sexes” and boy do they stand by this.

Aside from the impressive shade range, the product speaks for itself. The addition and use of the oil absorbing ingredient ‘silica’ makes it ideal for oily skin types, however it is not limited to this. Introduce a rich moisturiser or add a couple of drops of oil into the foundation and you have yourself a foundation suitable for normal/dry skin types. Apply with a brush and buff in for a natural, skin-like finish, or apply with a sponge for added coverage.

Laura Mercier - Tinted Moisturiser illuminating – Natural Skin Perfector

Available at MECCA - $72 (6 shades available)

Instant glow, subtle coverage, skin perfecting finish.

This product has recently undergone a makeover and is now loaded with even more skincare benefits. The revamped formula is amazing.

Now with added ingredients to help improve skin tone, such as Glycerin, a super blend of antioxidants and skin conditioners including Algae & Licorice extract and Vitamin E & C.

On top of those skin loving ingredients, this particular formula contains micro milled pearls for extra radiance and believe me when I say, the glow is like no other. Soft, lit from within skin with light, minimal coverage.

Apply with your fingers for a radiant, minimal coverage complexion or for a little added coverage, use a small brush to add product in any area you want to build the coverage. Also available in standard tinted moisturiser – and comes in 20 shades.

Designer Brands (DB Cosmetics) - Luminous Hydrating Foundation

Available at Scott Dibben Chemist -$19.99 (12 shades available)

Radiant formula, blends seamlessly for a dewy, glowing skin-like finish. Medium/buildable coverage.

This foundation is a total hidden gem! Loaded with skin loving benefits like Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E & C and Aloe Vera with light reflecting particles for added radiance.
It blends so beautifully and has a buttery finish on the skin.

Finish with powder to set only where needed (I personally like to just set lightly under the eyes and around the mouth) and let the dewy finish of the foundation do the talking.

Perfect for that fresh, summer glow. Apply with your fingers for a soft coverage and radiant finish or with a brush or sponge for a fuller coverage.

This brand is also entirely Vegan and Cruelty Free certified.

NARS - Sheer Glow Foundation

Available at MECCA $72 (41 shades available)

Buildable coverage, extensive shade range, soft semi matte finish.

One of my most frequently used foundations, I am yet to find someone who can’t wear this formula.

The shade range is very inclusive, and the formula is unique. There is a reason this continues to win awards. Sheer Glow offers a semi matte finish that can be tailored to suit anybody. If your skin sits on the drier side, use a more nourishing moisturiser underneath, if your skin sits on the oilier side, use a lighter moisturiser and an oil controlling primer. I don’t say this lightly, but this product is ideal for all skin types.

Long wearing formula that offers added skin benefits such as glycerin for extensive hydration, Vitamin C to brighten and the most unique discovery, Turmeric to maintain radiance and even skin tone.

M.A.C - Face and Body Foundation

Available at David Jones $54 (12 shades available)

Dewy finish, lightweight, skin-like finish.

I truly don’t believe there is anything like this formula on the market.
Used backstage at Fashion Week for years and years, it is virtually undetectable on the skin and offers a radiance that emulates fresh, healthy skin almost as well as the real thing. I personally refer to this as a ‘flexible formula’ meaning it moves with your skin and doesn’t settle into any fine lines or facial expressions.

The finish is dewy and skin like and can be built up to offer pretty substantial coverage, all the while maintaining the integrity of the product, remaining dewy, fresh and adaptable.

Yves Saint Laurent - Le Teint Touche Éclat Foundation

Available at David Jones - $89 (15 shades available)

Radiant, semi-matte finish, medium buildable coverage

Le Teint has become the most recent addition to my kit that I will never be able to take out. The texture and finish are like no other. The formula is a lightweight liquid, and offers medium to full coverage without ever feeling mask like. Light reflecting particles offer beautiful radiance, while the foundation sets to a semi matte finish and lasts all day.
I love to buff this in with a brush from the centre of the face, to the outer areas and then take a damp sponge and add a little more coverage through the centre of the face.
