Newcastle icons

As development progresses, you’ll see existing stores move within the centre.

Local designer and illustrator Inga Campbell of Inkling Design has created a beautiful artwork for a hoarding in the carpeted mall near Tigerlily. It features iconic Newcastle building, Customs House.

Stay tuned for store movements and announcements closer to launch time.

Fun for the kids

The children’s play area on Level 2 near Target will be having a makeover.

Feedback on how the area could be improved is welcome from the local community. You can share your views in an online survey.

26 September update

Sustainability in the centre

As part of Westfield Kotara’s commitment to sustainability, the new centre will include 4,122 solar panels, with 730 of those dedicated to creating a shade canopy on the Level 3 carpark.

The canopy alone will produce roughly enough energy to power approximately 3701 homes or over 250,0002 light bulbs for a year.

References: 1. Average consumption of household based on Ausgrid data of 15.7KWh/day 2. Based on 20W light bulbs

New specialty stores taking shape

Westfield Kotara’s new Level 2 mall will be home to more than 30 specialty retailers, which are set to open in mid-October.

The structure of the mall is complete and now those retailers’ shop-fitters are all busily working away behind the scenes to have their stores ready.

News stores opening in the new mall from mid October include JB Hi-Fi, Surf Dive n Ski, Carla Swimwear, Playtypus, Universal Store, Johnny Bigg, Skechers and more.

Marking time

Thank you to everyone who sent in suggestions for inclusion in the time capsule, which will be buried in the centre in November.

It was hard to choose only five winners from all the great suggestions received. The winners were chosen because their ideas were either quite unique, representative of 2018 or something that’s unlikely to be used in 2038 when the time capsule will be dug up.

Congratulations to:
• David Gleeson who was the first, but one of many, to suggest the craze of 2018: Coles Mini Collectables.
• Caroll Callen who suggested a credit card because there will most likely be other ways to pay in 2038.
• Amit Wadhwani who came up with the idea of postage stamps.
• Anthony Parker who noted that Australia is a nation of coffee drinkers and suggested a coffee pod be included.
• Vanessa Small who said a souvenir of the event of the year, the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle, was worth an inclusion.

19 September update

Improving your parking experience

Over the coming weeks, Westfield Kotara will be improving your parking experience by introducing licence plate recognition technology.

This means there will be no paper tickets for a faster, easier entry and exit, to get you out of the car and into the centre to do what you came for. The PARK+ parking experience will be operational from Thursday 18 October.

Customers can pre-register now online here: https://account.westfield.com.au/register and find out about PARK+ here

Carpark access upgrades on Park Avenue

As part of the car park improvements being made at Westfield Kotara, works are currently underway on the Park Avenue side of the centre, with some lanes into the carpark being reconfigured to allow for PARK+ works.

Carpark team members will be in place through until Saturday to help guide customers who enter via Park Avenue.

Lotus Express on the move

Customers who frequent the centre’s carpeted mall on Level 2 will notice long-standing café Lotus Express is set to move just a short distance up the mall.

Lotus Express will continue to trade from its existing location while work is underway at their new location outside Tigerlily.

Check back next month for more progress shots on the new look café and its unique design.

12 September update

New leisure space

Customers who have been coming to the centre for many years will remember the suspended platform on Level 2 was part of Café Bon Oz.

In this current development, this area will transform and become a new leisure space.

It will be filled with comfy couches where customers can take some time out and recharge.

Local digital nomads will also enjoy the space because it will be filled with plenty of power points to charge phones, laptops and other devices.

This space will be in front of H&M, which is at the entry to the new mall.

A splash of colour

Behind the walls of the new mall, there are not only tradespeople working but artists too.

Over the weekend, Sydney artist Scott Marsh splashed his distinct graffiti style over the walls of what will become the new mall.

Customers will be able to see Scott’s work in full near the travellators in the new mall, when it opens in mid-October.

To see more of Scott’s work, visit Scott's website here.

Time’s ticking

Thank you to those who have contributed suggestions for the centre’s time capsule, which will be buried in the centre in late November and opened in 20 years’ time.

There’s space for a few small items to add.

So far, suggestions include disposable items such as coffee cups and plastic bags, which will hopefully no longer be relied upon in 2038.

Thank you to local high school, St Pius X at Adamstown for sending in an aerial shot of their school plus their school newsletter.

Email kotaramarketing@scentregroup.com with your name and suggestion of an item that’s reflective of 2018.

The top five answers will each receive a prize pack that includes a double VMAX movie pass to Event Cinemas Kotara.

Entries close Wednesday 19 September at midnight.

Fresh new look for Financial Alley

Over the next week, new look pavers are being laid on Level 1 outside ANZ Bank through to The Cheesecake shop as part of the centre upgrades. All stores will be trading as normal during this time and signage will be in place to guide pedestrians to alternate entry points for each store while works are underway.

29 August update

New store announcement

A first to market Zara, Gorman, Billini and The Academy Brand will open as part of the existing centre’s premium fashion remix in late 2018. New stores due to open from mid October include H&M, Kmart, JB Hi-Fi, Platypus, Skechers, Johnny Bigg, Hype DC, Universal Store, Carla Swimwear, Surf Dive n Ski, Barber Industries, Mr & Mrs Jones, The Athlete’s Foot, Angus & Coote, Jeanswest and more. Westfield Kotara will be the only centre between Sydney and the Gold Coast where customers can shop Zara and H&M, Kmart and a three-level full line David Jones, all in the one location.

With a focus on lifestyle and entertainment, the centre will have plenty on offer for the young and young at heart, with Level 2 also welcoming Parrey Skate, a well known Novocastrian operator, who plan on featuring a half-pipe within their store. The thrill will also continue up on Level 3 with a first to New South Wales EMF Fitness Centre and a Cold Rock Ice Creamery.

Louie the Lifter has left the building

Our big crane, affectionately known as Louie the Lifter, left the development site over the weekend.

Check out this time-lapse clip, which shows that grey skies and a bit of drizzle didn’t stop the dismantling and removal of Louie.

This weekend, it’s time for Kim Kranedashian to be dismantled.

The two cranes are no longer required as the new structure is nearly complete.

Local kids farewell Louie

A few children turned out to farewell Louie on Sunday. The team had a visit from one local boy named Archie who loves all things trucks and construction. Archie has been a keen observer of the progress of our development over the past few months.
Thanks for stopping by Archie.

Marking time – fill the time capsule

To mark the opening of the development and the year 2018, we will be placing a time capsule in the centre, which will be opened in 20 years’ time in 2038.

The capsule is filling up quickly. We have included design plans, photos of the centre’s evolution, receipts from our retailers, a parking ticket and also an old iPhone.

We want to hear from the local community on what else we should include in the time capsule. We have space for five more small items.

Simply email kotaramarketing@scentregroup.com with your name and suggestion of an item that’s reflective of 2018. Entries close Wed 19 Sept at midnight.

The top five answers will each receive a prize pack that includes a double VMAX movie pass to Event Cinemas Kotara.

22 August update

Farewell Kim and Louie

The time has come to farewell cranes Louie the Lifter and Kim Kranedashian, which were named by the local community.

Their heavy-lifting, multi-tasking services are no longer required as the new structure is nearly complete.

Louie will be dismantled and taken down on Saturday 25 to Sunday 26 August. Over the two days, the lane closest to the centre on Northcott Drive will be closed. This means that the Northcott Drive/Cynthia Street carpark entry and exit will be closed. A traffic guidance system will be in place to assist drivers.

Kim will be farewelled the following weekend.

Development team spotlight

Declan O’Brien
Role: Structural and Civil Engineer

Declan’s role in Kotara’s development is to provide engineering technical guidance to the site team and contractors.

He liaises with both the design and site teams to ensure all work is completed safely and productively.

Declan hails from Ireland and has been with Scentre Group Design and Construction for five years.

The challenging parts of Declan’s role include managing the complexity of such a large build and merging the old and new structures in the centre.

Declan says he enjoys seeing what once were drawings come to life as the build progresses.

The last of the concrete pours

As the development nears completion, there are only two final concrete pours, which will finish the structure of The Rooftop extension on Level 3.

Through the development, the construction team have poured over 24,000 cubic metres of concrete over an area of 16,000 square metres.

It’s almost time to say goodbye to our cranes

Our cranes ‘Louie the Lifter’ and ‘Kim Kranedashian’ are leaving us at the end of August. Affectionately named by the community they will be missed on our skyline. Both cranes have been essential in the building of our new mall.

Crane fun facts

  • Louie the Lifter is 58m high and can lift up to a massive 24 tonnes!
  • Kim Kranedashian is 38m high and can lift up to 12 tonnes!

Between them they have lifted over 600 tonnes of structural steel to build our new mall.

We know many local children have enjoyed watching the cranes’ progress - scroll down to see the 'Colour our cranes' competition open until 26 August.

Raise the roof!

An extension to The Rooftop, our dining and entertainment precinct forms part of this current development.

The steel frame for this extension was recently erected, which can be seen in the centre of the below photo, under the arm of the crane.

The new area will welcome a vibrant mix of retail brands suitable for the whole family, including entertainment and a new fitness offering.

We look forward to sharing more about what will be on offer on The Rooftop soon.

Hudson Park entry

The Hudson Park entry is currently closed for upgrade works and will reopen mid-August. Please use the Cynthia St entry off Northcott Drive during this time.

July time-lapse

July was a busy month for construction with the Level 3 structure taking shape, this structure forms part of The Rooftop extension.

Towards the end of the time-lapse, the roof sheets are added and the green bags in the background are full of insulation for the new roof.

Also in the background is the development of the concrete structure, which will form a new loading dock for our specialty retailers.

June snapshot

The rainy days in June didn’t slow down progress on construction as the 30 second time-lapse video below shows.

It was a busy month that included three large concrete pours for the extension of The Rooftop on Level 3.

Structural steel was also erected on Level 3 to create the frame of the new retail stores.

On the far right-hand side of the time lapse you can see the roof of the new mall on Level 2 starting to take shape. The new section on Level 2 will feature 30 fashion and lifestyle stores including a new Kmart and JB Hi-Fi.

Development team spotlight

Donna Wallace
Role: Tenancy Delivery Manager – Leasing & Retail Solutions

How long have you worked for Westfield?
12 years in August.

How many people do you work with on a day to day basis?
Anywhere between 10 – 50, sometimes face to face, other times on the phone or video link.

What is your favourite part of your job?
Watching our customers reaction when we open a new section of the centre, such as The Rooftop in 2015. The current development is the fourth project I have worked on at Westfield Kotara.

Recently a little girl came up to me with her Mum at the Level 2 Kids Play area (I was wearing my hard hat, boots & high vis vest) and she wanted to know if I worked for the Fire Brigade and if there was a Fire in the shopping centre. I told the little girl and her Mum that there wasn’t a fire and that I worked in the construction team; I was helping to build a bigger and better shopping centre, so at the end of the year, there would be more shops for them to shop in and buy things from, which will be nice for Christmas. The little girl’s mum then said ‘See, women can do anything, just like your Engineer book at home.’ They thanked me and went back to playing, after the little girl gave me a huge smile – this was very rewarding.

What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Juggling the needs of everyone that I call my customer - Leasing, Construction, Centre Management, Development, the Retailer, shopfitter, Support Office Senior Management.

What’s one of your highlights or successes you’re proud of at Westfield?
Our DNA of never give up, work together, push the limits, leave a positive legacy & act with integrity is always at the front of my mind which led me to win two awards after the delivery of The Rooftop in November 2015. In the last quarter of 2015 I was nominated for and then won a 6 Star Service Award as well as what is called the John O’Loughlin Award; this is the highest annual award in Leasing & Retail Solutions. I am immensely proud of these achievements.

What are you looking forward to as part of the development at Kotara?
Being a part of a new construction team, working with international retailers (a first for me), managing a diverse delivery team (another first), to see every retailer open after working through all the plans and of course to me, the most important part is seeing the gratitude on our customers faces at the launch.

Lexington entry works

From Monday 16 July, there will be upgrade works to the right hand entry and right hand exit lanes at Lexington Parade. These works may cause a short delay when entering and exiting the centre.

Extra signage will be in place as well as additional carpark team members on site on to assist with any congestion issues.

Please contact our concierge team if you have any questions on 4016 2571.

4 July update

Cynthia Street carpark entrance

The Cynthia St entry/exit gate are currently closed for essential works. This includes the installation of new lighting as well as a new speed hump upon exit to make it safer when leaving the centre. The entry/exit will reopen and be fully operational in time for the school holidays.

In late July, we will be opening new car spaces out the front of St George bank.

Touch a Truck

School holidays are just around the corner and we’re inviting kids to get up close to some of the trucks used in our development.

We’ll have helmets and hi-vis vests ready for the kids to dress up as construction workers. There will also be an opportunity to touch and sit on a mini excavator and mini bobcat.

Monday 9 – Friday 13 July
10am – 2pm
Level 1 outside David Jones

This is a free event, no bookings are required.

27 June update

Our cranes have names

Thank you to everyone who voted in our recent ‘Name Our Cranes’ competition on our Facebook page. We had over 1000 votes and are happy to announce the two winning names.

In a very close vote, our multi-tasking crane in pink now has a suitably clever new name, Kim Kranedashian.

The votes for our heavy-lifting crane dressed in green was overwhelmingly in favour of the very cute new name, Louie The Lifter.

Congratulations to Nicole and Nella who submitted these winning names. They have each won a $200 Westfield Gift Card.

We’ll keep you updated on the work of these two and when they will be departing as we move closer to our launch later this year.

Level 2 entry to the centre re-opens

Work has been taking place on Level 2 at the entry near Cotton On to accommodate the northern entry to the new mall. This entry will re-open on Thursday 28 June with full access to the car park and lift.

20 June update

Vote for your favourite crane name

We received hundreds of entries in our Name our Cranes competition - thank you to everyone who entered! We have shortlisted two names for each crane and now it’s over to the you to vote.

Tell us, should our multi-tasking pink crane be Kim Kranedashian or Cynthia? Is Hudson or Louie the lifter the perfect name for our heavy-lifting green crane?

Vote now in our Facebook poll here

Terms and conditions apply, competition is a game of skill, one entry per person. Entries close midnight Sunday 24 June 2018 and those who put forward the winning names of each crane will be notified on Monday 25 June 2018.

13 June update

Pour the floor

Take a look at a 'day in the life' of one of our hard-working concrete pumps. The time-lapse video below shows a day in May when a large section was being poured of what will become our new car park out the front of the ANZ through to St George Bank on level 1. The concrete pump completed this section in just eight hours of work.

In this space, we will have over 500 undercover car parking spaces. Above this car park will be the new home for Kmart, as well as 30 new fashion and lifestyle stores. The centre will expand out towards Northcott Drive.

We will continue to share more of our development’s progress with time-lapse videos over the coming months. We cannot wait for the new car park and stores to open late this year.

Development team spotlight

We will regularly be interviewing Westfield staff and contractors who are working on our development. First up is Tom, our Project Planner.

Name: Tom Jubb
Role: Project Planner for Scentre Group (owner and operator of Westfield Australia and New Zealand)

How long have you worked for Westfield?
Four years.

What do you do day to day?
I write, manage and report on the Construction Programme as well as coordinate and direct all the different trades on site.

What did you do to become a Project Planner?
I did a Construction Management Degree at Newcastle University and has 10 years' experience in the commercial construction industry around Sydney and Newcastle.

What is the most challenging part of your job?
Probably the coordination of technical and dangerous activities within a busy shopping centre, while also staying on track for our opening day late 2018.

What is one of your highlights or successes you are proud of at Westfield?
I also worked on The Rooftop development which was a lot of fun, the finished product is something I am so proud of. I enjoy using this area personally with my family and friends and like seeing the love it gets from the community.

What are you excited to see come to life at Kotara?
To see the new section completed late this year and walking it from end to end instead of looking at the plans.

Name our cranes

Our hard-working cranes have been a feature of the Kotara skyline for some time and before they leave us we’ve asked the local community to give them names.

The ‘Name our cranes’ competition kicked off last week and so far, we’ve received plenty of witty and wonderful entries.

There are also great prizes up for grabs. Find out more and enter here. Entries close midnight Sunday 17 June 2018.

Hard hat tours for our retailers

Last week we held tours of our development site for our current retailers to give them an understanding of how the centre will look when work is complete later this year.

Tom, our Construction Project Planner, guided the tour along Level 2 to the former Kmart site for a peek into what will be our new section which will house 30 new specialty stores.

We had a great response to our tours and retailers were particularly interested to see the inside of the new mall, which is on the Northcott Drive side of the centre.

Later in the year, we will be hosting hard hat tours to the public. Stay tuned for further information.

Carpark works outside David Jones on Level 3

If you enter the centre via Lexington Parade, you will notice some temporary changes to the carpark outside the David Jones customer entry.

The construction team is working to waterproof the carpark’s concrete slab to ensure it’s ready for one of our new international retailers, which will move in below this site on Level 2.

This Level 3 carpark is still open with drivers being directed to use the carpark in a one-way loop.

We anticipate that we will return the carpark to full use in August.
