8 August update

It’s almost time to say goodbye to our cranes

Our cranes ‘Louie the Lifter’ and ‘Kim Kranedashian’ are leaving us at the end of August. Affectionately named by the community they will be missed on our skyline. Both cranes have been essential in the building of our new mall.

Crane fun facts

  • Louie the Lifter is 58m high and can lift up to a massive 24 tonnes!
  • Kim Kranedashian is 38m high and can lift up to 12 tonnes!

Between them they have lifted over 600 tonnes of structural steel to build our new mall.

We know many local children have enjoyed watching the cranes’ progress - scroll down to see the 'Colour our cranes' competition open until 26 August.

Raise the roof!

An extension to The Rooftop, our dining and entertainment precinct forms part of this current development.

The steel frame for this extension was recently erected, which can be seen in the centre of the below photo, under the arm of the crane.

The new area will welcome a vibrant mix of retail brands suitable for the whole family, including entertainment and a new fitness offering.

We look forward to sharing more about what will be on offer on The Rooftop soon.

Hudson Park entry

The Hudson Park entry is currently closed for upgrade works and will reopen mid-August. Please use the Cynthia St entry off Northcott Drive during this time.

July time-lapse

July was a busy month for construction with the Level 3 structure taking shape, this structure forms part of The Rooftop extension.

Towards the end of the time-lapse, the roof sheets are added and the green bags in the background are full of insulation for the new roof.

Also in the background is the development of the concrete structure, which will form a new loading dock for our specialty retailers.

Level 3 waterproofing update

Waterproofing works are continuing on Level 3 outside David Jones. One half has been completed with the second section now well under way. This is expected to be completed by the end of August. During this time, there is additional signage in place to direct you to the Lexington Parade exit.

25 July update

Fun facts

As work continues ahead of our late 2018 launch, here are a few fun facts about our development:
• Our team are using 15 different excavators of varying sizes from 1.35 tonne to 45 tonnes!
• We have a 90-tonne piling rig which can drill 30 metres down through layers of rock.
• So far, more than 200 people have been working on site to build our new mall.
• Over 16,000 cubic metres of dirt has been removed from our construction site – that’s 600 truckloads of dirt!

From mid to end July the upgrade will affect Level 2 and 2M on the Lexington Parade side of the centre.

We will continue to keep everyone updated as the works make their way through the car park.

Touch a Truck photos

Kids loved dressing up in high vis vests and hard hats to climb on trucks used in our development last week. We had a forklift, mini crane, bobcat and excavator in centre for kids to inspect and have their photo taken with.

View all the photos here on our Facebook page.

11 July update

New car spaces opening

On Monday 16 July, we will be opening new car spaces on Level 1 carpark outside St George Bank, Audio Clinic and Newcastle Permanent.

The spaces are just some of the 500 undercover spaces, which will open on Level 1 once development is complete.

June snapshot

The rainy days in June didn’t slow down progress on construction as the 30 second time-lapse video below shows.

It was a busy month that included three large concrete pours for the extension of The Rooftop on Level 3.

Structural steel was also erected on Level 3 to create the frame of the new retail stores.

On the far right-hand side of the time lapse you can see the roof of the new mall on Level 2 starting to take shape. The new section on Level 2 will feature 30 fashion and lifestyle stores including a new Kmart and JB Hi-Fi.

Development team spotlight

Donna Wallace
Role: Tenancy Delivery Manager – Leasing & Retail Solutions

How long have you worked for Westfield?
12 years in August.

How many people do you work with on a day to day basis?
Anywhere between 10 – 50, sometimes face to face, other times on the phone or video link.

What is your favourite part of your job?
Watching our customers reaction when we open a new section of the centre, such as The Rooftop in 2015. The current development is the fourth project I have worked on at Westfield Kotara.

Recently a little girl came up to me with her Mum at the Level 2 Kids Play area (I was wearing my hard hat, boots & high vis vest) and she wanted to know if I worked for the Fire Brigade and if there was a Fire in the shopping centre. I told the little girl and her Mum that there wasn’t a fire and that I worked in the construction team; I was helping to build a bigger and better shopping centre, so at the end of the year, there would be more shops for them to shop in and buy things from, which will be nice for Christmas. The little girl’s mum then said ‘See, women can do anything, just like your Engineer book at home.’ They thanked me and went back to playing, after the little girl gave me a huge smile – this was very rewarding.

What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Juggling the needs of everyone that I call my customer - Leasing, Construction, Centre Management, Development, the Retailer, shopfitter, Support Office Senior Management.

What’s one of your highlights or successes you’re proud of at Westfield?
Our DNA of never give up, work together, push the limits, leave a positive legacy & act with integrity is always at the front of my mind which led me to win two awards after the delivery of The Rooftop in November 2015. In the last quarter of 2015 I was nominated for and then won a 6 Star Service Award as well as what is called the John O’Loughlin Award; this is the highest annual award in Leasing & Retail Solutions. I am immensely proud of these achievements.

What are you looking forward to as part of the development at Kotara?
Being a part of a new construction team, working with international retailers (a first for me), managing a diverse delivery team (another first), to see every retailer open after working through all the plans and of course to me, the most important part is seeing the gratitude on our customers faces at the launch.

Lexington entry works

From Monday 16 July, there will be upgrade works to the right hand entry and right hand exit lanes at Lexington Parade. These works may cause a short delay when entering and exiting the centre.

Extra signage will be in place as well as additional carpark team members on site on to assist with any congestion issues.

Please contact our concierge team if you have any questions on 4016 2571.

4 July update

Cynthia Street carpark entrance

The Cynthia St entry/exit gate are currently closed for essential works. This includes the installation of new lighting as well as a new speed hump upon exit to make it safer when leaving the centre. The entry/exit will reopen and be fully operational in time for the school holidays.

In late July, we will be opening new car spaces out the front of St George bank.

Touch a Truck

School holidays are just around the corner and we’re inviting kids to get up close to some of the trucks used in our development.

We’ll have helmets and hi-vis vests ready for the kids to dress up as construction workers. There will also be an opportunity to touch and sit on a mini excavator and mini bobcat.

Monday 9 – Friday 13 July
10am – 2pm
Level 1 outside David Jones

This is a free event, no bookings are required.

27 June update

Our cranes have names

Thank you to everyone who voted in our recent ‘Name Our Cranes’ competition on our Facebook page. We had over 1000 votes and are happy to announce the two winning names.

In a very close vote, our multi-tasking crane in pink now has a suitably clever new name, Kim Kranedashian.

The votes for our heavy-lifting crane dressed in green was overwhelmingly in favour of the very cute new name, Louie The Lifter.

Congratulations to Nicole and Nella who submitted these winning names. They have each won a $200 Westfield Gift Card.

We’ll keep you updated on the work of these two and when they will be departing as we move closer to our launch later this year.

Level 2 entry to the centre re-opens

Work has been taking place on Level 2 at the entry near Cotton On to accommodate the northern entry to the new mall. This entry will re-open on Thursday 28 June with full access to the car park and lift.

20 June update

Vote for your favourite crane name

We received hundreds of entries in our Name our Cranes competition - thank you to everyone who entered! We have shortlisted two names for each crane and now it’s over to the you to vote.

Tell us, should our multi-tasking pink crane be Kim Kranedashian or Cynthia? Is Hudson or Louie the lifter the perfect name for our heavy-lifting green crane?

Vote now in our Facebook poll here

Terms and conditions apply, competition is a game of skill, one entry per person. Entries close midnight Sunday 24 June 2018 and those who put forward the winning names of each crane will be notified on Monday 25 June 2018.

13 June update

Pour the floor

Take a look at a 'day in the life' of one of our hard-working concrete pumps. The time-lapse video below shows a day in May when a large section was being poured of what will become our new car park out the front of the ANZ through to St George Bank on level 1. The concrete pump completed this section in just eight hours of work.

In this space, we will have over 500 undercover car parking spaces. Above this car park will be the new home for Kmart, as well as 30 new fashion and lifestyle stores. The centre will expand out towards Northcott Drive.

We will continue to share more of our development’s progress with time-lapse videos over the coming months. We cannot wait for the new car park and stores to open late this year.

Development team spotlight

We will regularly be interviewing Westfield staff and contractors who are working on our development. First up is Tom, our Project Planner.

Name: Tom Jubb
Role: Project Planner for Scentre Group (owner and operator of Westfield Australia and New Zealand)

How long have you worked for Westfield?
Four years.

What do you do day to day?
I write, manage and report on the Construction Programme as well as coordinate and direct all the different trades on site.

What did you do to become a Project Planner?
I did a Construction Management Degree at Newcastle University and has 10 years' experience in the commercial construction industry around Sydney and Newcastle.

What is the most challenging part of your job?
Probably the coordination of technical and dangerous activities within a busy shopping centre, while also staying on track for our opening day late 2018.

What is one of your highlights or successes you are proud of at Westfield?
I also worked on The Rooftop development which was a lot of fun, the finished product is something I am so proud of. I enjoy using this area personally with my family and friends and like seeing the love it gets from the community.

What are you excited to see come to life at Kotara?
To see the new section completed late this year and walking it from end to end instead of looking at the plans.

30 May update

Hard hat tours for our retailers

Last week we held tours of our development site for our current retailers to give them an understanding of how the centre will look when work is complete later this year.

Tom, our Construction Project Planner, guided the tour along Level 2 to the former Kmart site for a peek into what will be our new section which will house 30 new specialty stores.

We had a great response to our tours and retailers were particularly interested to see the inside of the new mall, which is on the Northcott Drive side of the centre.

Later in the year, we will be hosting hard hat tours to the public. Stay tuned for further information.

Carpark works outside David Jones on Level 3

If you enter the centre via Lexington Parade, you will notice some temporary changes to the carpark outside the David Jones customer entry.

The construction team is working to waterproof the carpark’s concrete slab to ensure it’s ready for one of our new international retailers, which will move in below this site on Level 2.

This Level 3 carpark is still open with drivers being directed to use the carpark in a one-way loop.

We anticipate that we will return the carpark to full use in August.
