Dress to impress at VAMFF 2020 with Jess Dempsey

Nothing is more exciting in the Aussie fashion community than this time of the year. With the autumn leaves about to drop, so is the latest A/W20 collections in our favourite retailers. Nothing says style like good layering pieces, fresh new trends, hints of colour and sleek winter coats and that is exactly why this season is the most stylish season of the year. March in Melbourne is when VAMFF kicks off a wonderful fashion celebration, the fashion crew inspire us with their street style and we can all get amongst the hype, knowing that what we see on the runway is instantly available for us to shop. So, it’s time to get excited with us, as we give you a first look into four key trends that we are loving this A/W20. Think blue hues, sleek relaxed neutral suits and playful prints all ready to have your front row ready, or simply to add to your wardrobe for a stylish year ahead.

Stand Out Prints

What I love most about attending VAMFF every year is the moment to express myself through my fashion style. One key trend we will see in street style this year is fashion lovers making prints the hero in their outfits. Animal prints, floral prints, check and paisley are creeping into the stores at Westfield as we speak. Find your favourite printed garment and feel fearless in your bold choice and don’t be afraid to double up on the print for extra photo worthy moments. For those who love print but prefer to stay out of the limelight, simply tone back your hero print with some great basics.

True Blue

We are seeing blue in 2020 and honouring the Pantone Colour of the year. This calming shade will be a favourite on the VAMFF runway and will be seen from classic blue trench coats through to a pop of blue in footwear. The styling of blue is endless, it could be as simple as your blue staple jeans with a white tee, a bold blue stiletto or go all out and rock an all blue look from top to toe, with this in mind, you will be on trend this year.

Dress up with edge

VAMFF runways are offered all week at many different times of the day, including late evening. For runways such as the Opening Gala or the Grand Showcase, don’t be afraid to dress up in celebration of those special shows. Metallics, sequins, long gowns, heavenly prints and textures are a fun way to elevate your VAMFF outfit amongst the fash-crowd. My tip: edge it up with some not-so-dressy pieces such as ankle boots, sneakers, denim jackets, hats, belts or chunky knits. Layering a cocktail dress or gown can really set your styling apart from an everyday look.

Barely There

VAMFF is iconic for the most prestigious runways and best street style in Melbourne and nothing says sophisticated style in 2020 than a sleek top-to-toe neutral outfit. Think nude hues, browns, creams, all white and chic hair accessories styled into a tailored ensemble, slip dress and trench coats. Match your shoes with your outfit to give a barely there look and when it comes to beauty; opt for effortless hair with volume and soft make-up. The designers featured in the runways will showcase a similar shop-it-now collection to have you inspired for your year ahead.
