Knox Community Chess Club

Checkmate

For over three years, Westfield Knox has been the home for the Knox Community Chess Enthusiast (KCCE) group. If you've visited our Community Space (located near iContact Optometrists & Liqurland) on a Thursday, you may have seen the serious faces of the players, strategising their next move.

The KCCE was established in 2017 by founder, Eddie Atacador who loves the game and his local community. The group which initially only met once a week on a Thursday at Westfield Knox, has since grown in popularity and expanded into the first Saturday of the month, as well as an additional Friday evening session at the Rowville Library. The group which started with just two players and now sees anywhere up to 1,000 participants across the three sessions.

The weekly chess sessions are open to people of all ages, genders, cultures and abilities and through establishing this group, Eddie has been able to create a sense of belonging and inclusion within the community. The KCCE is an environment where a diverse range of community members can participate in a mentally stimulating activity while continuing to interact and meet new people.

Unfortunately, due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic the KCCE group has had to temporarily pause all upcoming matches and exhibitions. However, members of the group are encouraged to participate in Eddie’s weekly Zoom program called “KCCE Chess Talk Zoom Online Program” every Wednesday from 7pm – 9pm. In this forum Eddie will be upskilling members on how to take advantage of current technologies, including Zoom to teach individuals on how to play chess online. To take part in the weekly Zoom session, please email Eddie here.

The KCCE is run by volunteers who are thankful for the continued support from the Knox city Council’s Community Development Fund, Minor Grants Program and Coonara Community House. Westfield Knox is a proud partner of the Knox Community Chess Enthusiast group and we look forward to having the group resume their weekly activities in centre in the near future.
