5 must-try men's winter trends

Let's be honest: generally speaking, men don't get to have as much fun with fashion as women. The reason varies from person to person; for some, they just aren't as interested in putting together "looks", and for most, there's simply not as many options to choose from. While the girls are mixing and matching skirts with tees, jackets with pants, and punctuating their outfits with scarves, heels and jewels, many men put on the first thing they see in the wardrobe, without a second thought. In fact, often, their biggest sartorial question of the day is, "Which tee will I wear with my jeans today?"

Whether you're a guy yourself, or you're constantly trying to up your man's fashion game, here are five trends to do just that. Each of them are perfect for winter, available everywhere and a subtle (read: non-scary) update on what is already in the closet.

Sportswear

Possibly the biggest menswear trend of the year is sportswear - think slouchy hoodies, snap and track pants, snug beanies and bomber jackets so big they threaten to swallow you whole! Try incorporating sportswear into your other looks too (not just to and from the gym), like layering a hoodie under your blazer.

Straight-cut pants

Are skinny jeans officially dead? Ask any fashion-forward guy and he will say yes - pants and jeans in 2018 are cropped at the ankle and straight or wider in the leg. If you're a skinny-leg wearer, they might feel strange at first, but give them a go with hoodies or blazers, and don't forget some fun socks - they'll be on show!

Statement jackets

This season is not for wallflowers! Whether you're into bombers, blazers or coats, it's all about making a statement through textures, shapes, prints, colours and lengths. Find one you like, then make it the focus with a simple tee, knit, jeans and sneakers.

Checks and pinstripes

If there are one or two prints to invest in for winter, it's gotta be checks and pinstripes. Perfect in a suit for work, or in a blazer-and-chinos combo for play, they will both give your look instant style cred. If you dare, try wearing head-to-toe check or pinstripes (like this suit) or clash them together.

Chunky sneakers

Sneakers are here to stay for yet another year, but our favourite Converse and Stan Smiths have been given a modern, Yeezy-inspired makeover. These days, the chunkier and bulkier the sneakers, the better! Head to Platypus, Hype DC and JD Sports to shop from (literally) hundreds of styles and colours to wear back with your tailoring or sportswear looks.
