How to mix investment pieces and chain store finds

Once upon a time, mixing high (more expensive investment pieces) and low (affordable trend pieces) was a handy trick reserved for the budget-conscious and sartorially savvy fashion girls of the world. That is, until celebrities like Beyonce, Olivia Palermo and Selena Gomez started stepping out in chic combos starring Hermes worn back with H&M.

But like most trends and stylist hacks, it can be difficult to nail it. Which pieces should we invest in and which pieces should we save our money on? Should our entire look be designer, with an affordable pair of shoes to balance it out? Or are we supposed to be adding investment shoes and bags to our high street threads?

The art of mixing high and low is easy once you get the hang of it, but I've given you three simple stylist-approved hacks below so you can get started right away, with the peace of mind you're spending your hard-earned money on the right things!

Hack #1: Mix & match your high and low
Create an outfit with a combination of high and low pieces for a fashion-forward look that will look anything but "cheap". Ensure your investment items are timeless and have a bit more fun with your less expensive pieces. Here, I've paired a $350 skirt with a $20 tee! My bag is $2200 and my sunglasses are $240, but my beret is only $25 and my shoes $90.

Hack #2: It's all about the shoes
One of the golden rules of mixing high and low fashion is putting all the focus on an investment pair of shoes (or bag!) and keeping the rest of your outfit simple and afforable. For this look, while my statement leather boots are $370, my dress is only $60 and my hat, bag and sunglasses are even cheaper!

Hack #3: A "high" blazer is always a good idea
If you're really not sure what to invest in when it comes to creating your high/low wardrobe, the first thing you should always start with is a blazer. Out of all the pieces in your wardrobe, this is by far the easiest to pair with more afforable items! This Carla Zampatti is close to $1000, but will never, ever date (promise!) and I've teamed it back with a pair of Cotton On jeans that are only $50. They have the best selection of on-trend denim!
