The one makeup trend you need this winter racing season

Gearing up for a day out at the races? When choosing your make-up look, consider something that will withstand the heat (yep, even in winter) and still make an impact.

Under the blazing Queensland sun, makeup tends to melt and leave unflattering creases. So skip the eyeshadow for this reason and instead accentuate your peepers using eyeliner. And don’t even think about reaching for black: this season’s frontrunner is a bright pop of colour.

How to pull it off

It’s sometimes said that applying eyeliner along the entire top and bottom lash line can make our eyes look smaller. But the same isn’t true where colour is involved. A bright eyeliner smudged along the upper and lower lash lines is incredibly eye-catching. If you prefer to stick to just the top, try a sharp feline flick with the help of a liquid liner in a rich hue.

Which colour for me?

Want to back a winner? Instead of letting your outfit dictate, choose your eyeliner based on your eye colour for maximum impact.

For blue eyes: Layering a cobalt blue eyeliner alongside your already cool-blue eyes is a big yes! The complementary shades work to make your eyes look brighter and even more striking.

For green eyes: Play with contrasts and line your green eyes with a purple or magenta shade.

For brown eyes: Lucky you! You can take your pick because every colour will accentuate your beautiful brown eyes. Pink is particularly popular right now and is the perfect accompaniment to a feminine frock.

Coloured eyes for rookies

Not sure you’re ready for an all-round eyeliner look? Opt for a standout coloured inner corner instead. Simply work a richly-pigmented eyeshadow powder around the inner ‘V’ of your eyes. It will give you that flicker of statement colour, while also making your eyes look wider.

Complete the look

A wash of mascara will help define your lashes so they pop against your colourful makeup. Opt for classic black or take your look to the next level with a coloured mascara that matches your eyeliner. Keep the rest of your makeup minimal – defined brows, a sweep of bronzer and a soft pink lip gloss are all you need to complete your race-day beauty look.
