Kids' craft activity: DIY worry monsters

Do your kids have big imaginations? We've put together a little rainy day craft activity that encourages them to dream up cute creatures and get their little fingers moving.

These worry monsters are inspired by Guatemalan worry dolls. They're made in a similar way (with wrapped wool) but are considerably bigger, so they're easier for kids to make. Just like worry dolls, they love to sleep under pillows and take away nightmares.

There is something soothing about wrapping wool and it's a great fine-motor activity for kids aged four and up. Younger ones will need help getting started and finished, but the rest of the activity is very simple for little hands to master.

Materials

  • Colourful wool (yarn)
  • Wooden clothes pegs
  • Craft glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Scissors
  • Felt and craft remnants for decorating (optional)

Instructions

  1. Head to your local Westfield and grab all of your bits and pieces.
  2. Get the kids to decide what they want their monsters to look like and wrap the pipe cleaners around the pegs where you want the arms and ears to be. You can easily cut pipe cleaners to size with scissors. Make sure to fold the pipe cleaners over at the ends to close off any sharp bits.
  3. Now pick a coloured yarn, open your peg and close it on the end of your yarn so it is stuck in place and start wrapping the yarn around the peg, slowly travelling down.
  4. If you want to change colours, just cut your yarn and tie the new colour on, then keep wrapping.
  5. To finish off, tie the yarn neatly and put a blob of craft glue to help the knot stick to the peg.
  6. Add some eyes with the glue. You can also decorate your monster with felt or other craft odds and ends. Done!
