Up there with snoods and dungarees, culottes are the newest tricky fashion trend to require a dictionary. Basically, culottes are knee- or midi-length trousers, cut with wide legs to resemble a skirt. Originally they were worn by the wealthy upper class gentlemen during the Renaissance period (Louis XVI, we’re looking at you) but like all good fashion items, they’ve stood the test of time. These days we’re more likely to catch culottes at Stella McCartney, DKNY and Givenchy fashion shows, and on the pins of fashion editors, bloggers and models with very, very long legs.
