Jeans are one of those clothing items that have the habit of becoming the “throw on”, the “back-up plan” or the “who really cares, I’m only running to the shops” attire. But jeans are SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT. They are the most comfortable, versatile and highly rotated pieces in our wardrobes, so why not take them beyond your plain t-shirt or jumper? The sky is the sartorial limit!
Our panel of denim experts from part 1 of this guide share the trends they’ll be rocking in winter and their best styling tips (no plain tees in sight!)
Every season, the Denim Gods give us a new batch of trends to play with because, you know, the same indigo straight legs can get pretty boring day after day. This season, we’ve got some goodies from relaxed leather to 70’s inspired flares. Check them out above.
Mom jeans – Scary but true! ‘Mom’ jeans are on the way.
My pick: General Pants Co. Rollas Duster Decades Jean
White jeans – Amazing tucked into tan boots, a chunky knit and an oversized floppy hat.
My pick: Crossroads White Jegging
Boyfriend jeans – Carried over from last year, boyfriend jeans are here to stay! Fine by me – they’re slouchy, comfortable and effortlessly cool.
My pick: Factorie Boyfriend Jean
Relaxed fit – A cross between a boyfriend jean and a harem pant, this relaxed fit is great with a tank and sandals for the weekend.
My pick: General Pants Co. Maurie & Eve Word Jean
Crop or 7/8 length – Sitting very tight just at the ankle, this 7/8 length is perfect if you’re petite or “vertically-challenged”.
My pick: Sussan Slim Dark Wash Jean
Smokey denim – A nice change from your standard blue, the smokey grey shade goes with everything. Everything.
My pick: Jeanswest Maternity Iona 7/8 Jean
Flares – Wear with a chunky wedge and fitted top or structured blazer for maximum Hamptons chic.
My pick: Jeanswest Buttlifter Jeans
Coated denim – Comfy like jeans, cool like leather. Perfect for layering textures and everyone’s favourite winter colour palette, black on black.
My pick: GUESS Brittney Jeans
Printed – Think dark, moody prints that add just the right amount of interest to your winter wardrobe.
My pick: Glue Store Mavi Serena Jeans
Patchwork – Add an edge to your everyday jeans with patchwork denim – great for drawing the eye to the legs.
My pick: Gorman Garden Patch Jean
Whether it’s making a tiny tweak to suit your outfit, or wearing them a whole different way, here are five new looks to try with your jeans.
- THE HALF-TUCK: Do the ‘half tuck’ by popping on a pair of skinny jeans with a floaty shirt or oversized tee, then front tuck half of it into your jeans. -Autograph
- THE CUFF: Cuff your skinny jeans to sit just above your ankle boots, so a small amount of skin is showing. Great for the side (leg) profile. -Sussan
- THE BOY MEETS GIRL: Contrast relaxed denim with a structured blazer and a pair of glossy heels. -Glue Store
- THE LAYER ON LAYER: Go crazy with layers by adding a long tee, crop jumper, anorak, a scarf, beanie and boots to skinny jeans. -Factorie
- THE DOUBLE DENIM: Make ‘denim on denim’ a polished look by pairing with a classic white tee and heels. -Sussan
That’s part 2 all wrapped up – stay tuned for part 3 where I’ll chat to the experts about caring for your denim. I think you’ll be very surprised!
