It’s time to lighten the mood and there’s no one more eager for the job than outrageous long-time besties Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley). The beloved queens of debauchery are officially back and they’re bringing their signature zeal for excess and side-splitting satire to the big screen.
With the original gang from the hit TV series in tow, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie sees the mischievous duo land themselves in trouble with the law after accidentally knocking Kate Moss into the River Thames. In an effort to find sanctuary, Eddy and Patsy retreat to the south of France, raising more than a few eyebrows among the elite international jet set along the way.
Lumley tells us we can expect a slew of "lovely, unexpected faces", by which she means John Paul Gaultier, Cara Delevingne, Jerry Hall, Alexa Chung, Emma Bunton, Lara Stone, Suki Waterhouse and Stella McCartney to name-drop just a few.
Making their return almost a quarter of a century since the TV series first aired in 1992, it’s true the characters have changed a little. “They’re living the same life,” Lumley says. “It’s just fraying around the edges a bit.”
Being in the midst of a season that's welcomed the return of more-is-more with open arms, there couldn’t be a better moment to revisit Patsy and Eddy’s flamboyant, costume-box approach to personal style. If you’d forgotten the sway of a thoughtfully placed backwards cap, or the undisputable timelessness of a pink power suit, Patsy and Eddy's boisterous return is sure to make the memo stick.
While the show and subsequent film have loud outfits aplenty, it’s the character’s enduring friendship that forms an overwhelming part of the franchise’s success. ”What people love is the two of them, it’s the Patsy and Eddy relationship,” Saunders says.
Whether it’s swigging Chanel No. 5 in the back of a cab, romping with a sea of drag queens, or starting the day with a bit o’ Bolly, it’s undisputable that the irreverent charm of Ab Fab is still utterly intoxicating.
