Blonde and brunette is so last season. Now it’s all about pastel coloured hair in fairy floss, electric, and candy colours.
You might’ve noticed this trend when your favourite celebrities started trading in their blonde balayage for dip-dyed pink, blue and purple ends. Well, there’s no denying the pastel hair trend is here to stay, and some of our favourite brands have jumped on board with their own products to create unicorn-inspired locks. I tried it out myself one rainy Saturday afternoon when my boring straight strands just weren’t doing it for me. Cue above selfie.
Unlike a hair ‘chalk’ which is an eyeshadow consistency that washes out with water (available from Sportsgirl, Priceline and Catwalk just to name a few), this DARE product (available at Hairhouse Warehouse) is more like a temporary hair dye, applied and left to sit for a while before washing out.
I chose to go with the ombré vibe by backcombing sections of my hair and combing it through, which was way easier than it sounds. The best part about pastel shades is that you don’t have to try too hard to get it right and can basically apply it wherever you like with a good result. Alternative to the dip-dye, you can create a reverse balayage effect by smudging out colour downwards from your scalp, or give yourself a few random candy-coloured streaks. Depending on your hair colour and condition, it will last about five washes.
In my pic above, I’ve used DARE no. 2 ‘Flamingo Feather’ but I’m ready for a bit more action so next up I’m trying DARE no. 5 ‘Neon Sherbet’ which has a lot more vibrancy (liquorice allsorts not included).
